  • Vray rectangle lights as LED strips

    Hi everyone,

This is my first post to this forum so please let me know if this is in the wrong place.

I'm relatively new to using Vray but have been using Sketchup for a good number of years now.

I design wine cellars/rooms for a living and constantly use LED strip lighting within some of the racking elements, plinth, worktop, shelving areas and displays etc.
To simulate these I have been using rectangle lights which seem to work pretty well but I'm not too sure how to go about calculating the correct output/brightness.
I usually just have to play around with the intensity until it looks right but this can add a lot of time into the process which I am trying to avoid.

From doing some research Lumens seems to be the correct way to go but I wanted to make sure that the rectangle lights in Vray, especially when stretched, do actually distribute the light similar to LED strip lighting.

Apologies if this sounds like a stupid question but I wanted to put this out there to see if what I'm doing is correct or if there are better more effective ways of doing this.

Really appreciate any tips or advice.

    Thank you

    Hi,

    Apologies for the late reply!

Kindly note that lighting setup is project-specific in regards to scene units, camera set up, exposure, etc. Generally V-Ray rectangle light can simulate LED strip lighting and the Directionality parameter could come in handy as it controls the direction the light is dispersed.

When the V-Ray light's units are set to Lumens, they would be produce the correct output, however adjusting the physical camera's parameters (ISO, F-stop, shutter speed) are crucial in respect to displaying the image

I just did this for a project. Wanted to simulate some Elation Colour Chorus 72s. I just added a rectangle light, sized to the front of my model, spaced .25" off of the front, then grouped to the model. Then in the light settings I set the directionality down to .90 - .95. Works well!

        Hi all,
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, apologies for the lateness.

I've attached a couple of recent renders where I have used a mixture of rectangle lights and mesh lights.
The results are good (still learning) but these still need work as my post processing skills in Photoshop are still pretty basic.

I work on my own and I'm self taught so don't often get any feed back for what I do, if you have any opinions or comments (no matter how harsh) then please feel free.

Any advice is very much appreciated.
