  • Increase HDRI image resolution?

    First of all, I'm using GPU and intend to keep it that way.

    HDRI image from hdrihaven ('tiergarten'). It's 8K. I also tried the 16K.

    The problem is in order to make it higher resolution, I need to increase the Dome Light "Tex Resolution."

    This image the Tex Resolution is already at 10,000. When I increase it more, I sometimes run out of GPU memory (2x GTX 1070 Ti).

    Is there any other way to increase the HDRI background image resolution other than cranking up Tex Resolution?

    Should I give up and just a) model the trees or b) photoshop the background ?

    Hello joey145

    I would like to propose the following solution instead:

    - Go to the V-Ray Asset Editor > Settings tab > Environment;
    - Right-click and Clear the default texture from the Background texture slot;
    - Paste the HDRI as a Bitmap in the Background texture slot, enable the GI, Reflection and Refraction and Copy+Paste As Instance the HDRI in their texture slots as well;
    - Adjust their intensity values to a higher number if needed. In my tests, values of 25-30 looked much better than 1.

    Please let me know if this workflow enables you to utilize the high resolution of the HDRI file.
