  • Image texture not rendering properly

I have a texture I'm using that represents a fabric material. It's a high quality large image and it was imported into sketchup as a texture and placed on a surface. The image looks fine in sketchup and you can even see the quality of the image. The texture will actually be an image in reality and not a real texture so actual texture bump mapping is not critical but the definition is.

When I begin a render, you can see what happens here. Definition is lost soon after the image begins to show in the frame buffer window.

Here and at this point the definition starts to get lost, at the beginning of the render

    The final render is worse.

I have tried to manipulate and turn on and turn off almost every setting I could find within the material and nothing changed the result. I also tried turning lights on and off to no avail. I also tried to change various parameters in the Render Settings in the Asset Editor and nothing I did resulted in any changes.
Here's the last settings I attempted:

I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could suggest something for me to try. Thanks

Try using vray uv options, or sketchuv plugin.. Bad topology also can cause issues..

I tired all the different mapping settings and nothing worked. I finally decided to bring just that object into another sketchup file and test it. It rendered just fine. So I started comparing every setting for materials and lights and finally got down to what was causing the problem. In my original file, I had the Render type set to CUDA.

I have a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB GDDR5 128 Bit PCI-E Graphic Card (GV-N105TD5-4GD). I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to rendering and certainly with Vray. From what I've read, I was under the impression that the CUDA setting was most appropriate for my machine and card and in fact, have been using if tor the last couple of months and it seemed to work. But for this material, the CPU setting worked much better. Here's the result nice and clear compared to the above.

I see there are other settings (in red) that appear when I do Select CUDA. So I have 3 followup questions:
      • Given my card, should I be using CPU instead of CUDA as a rule of thumb?
      • Or if using CUDA, would changing some of these settings (I'm not sure to what) have made the correction and given me the result that CPU did?
      • I already rendered other scenes in this file that don't have that texture. Most of them looked ok but should I re-render under either the CPU setting or under CUDA and changing some of these parameters for GPU texture (any direction of what to change would be appreciated) ?
      Thanks

        Hello blueman26,

        your observation is right.
You could use CUDA render engine, just choose Full-size textures from the Resize drop-down list in the section you highlighted in red.
That's the whole explanation, it may be helpful to you.

Here you declare, that you're using a large high quality image. Check this setting every time, when you want to use one, because this is a default GPU optimization.

Also, keep in mind that every Bitmap has Filter Blur slider.
To find it easily open its Advanced Settings:

Please, confirm that this resolves your issue.

        Best regards,

Yes thank you for the video and that did resolve the problem. Just to confirm, the only downside of that selection, Full-size textures, is slower performance?

            Glad to hear it.

Rendering Full-sized textures could increase the render time by a noticeable amount, depending on the count and the original size of the textures.

Please note that using a huge number of textures and/or very high-res textures could fill up the available GPU memory, which in turn would lead to an error message.

            Best regards,
            Tsvetomira
