  • How many render passes is a good number for progressive rendering in Vray 5 for Sketchup?

    Hi guys,

My render is taking forever to render with progressive mode on. It was taking even longer with bucket rendering so switched to progressive.
How many render passes is a good number before I stop the render?
Right now it says 36% pass 2752

    System Spec:

    Hi manishpaul_simon,

Progressive rendering, as you are aware, will improve quality over time; To control the quality of your image, you can use the Quality slider right below the Progressive option from the V-Ray Asset Editor. This will have an impact on the rendered image quality (better quality will result in more render passes) by changing the Raytrace (i.e., Noise, Subdivs, Bucket size, etc.) and Global Illumination settings; If you manually adjust any of those values, they will no longer take Quality presets into account but will instead select a Custom quality automatically.

That being said, it is up to you to decide when you wish to stop the render. You can either wait for the render to finish when it has reached the Quality selected from the preset (or when it reaches the adjusted custom settings) or if you feel satisfied with the result at some point during the progress, you can manually stop the render and save the output files through the VFB.

If you are using a Denoiser, make sure to enable the layer from the VFB after you stop the render. Alternatively, you may control how often the Denoiser is updated during Progressive mode by adjusting the Update Effects parameter to your desired needs.

You can read more on the matter in our docs page: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...der-Parameters

If you are having issues rendering any of your projects (either on Bucket or Progressive mode) you might want to get in touch with us through our contact form so we can investigate further what is happening. Sharing a file would greatly help us to do so.

Thankyou so much for your response.

It took me almost an hour to finish the render. And like you mentioned, it stopped automatically after reaching the number of passes.

I will check if it's the same time for future renders. If so, I will send across the files for you to investigate.

      Thanks again.
