  • Personal Proxy models that worked fine before now rendering solid flat black !?

Title says it all really, yet another paid project in the final stages in jeopardy because Vray has just decided to stop rendering my proxy models correctly (sighs in disbelief)

    Hi jason_cafferty,

We'll need some more details/screen grabs here. Can you let us know if you've made any changes recently, can you also forward us some project files to check on our end? Thanks!

Models have been used multiple times just fine. I just updated a few days ago but see there's yet another update now which I shall try first but I am concerned these updates are coming out too fast if they are going to break things that were fine before. I shall repost after updating and retrying the model.

Do let us know how it went. Additionally, can you specify in which (exact) version were they created? None of the updates should break things like that, so we'll have to look at it in detail. As mentioned, you can forward us the files through our contact form - just make sure to mention this thread (or my name) in the form subject.

          Hi jason_cafferty ,

Are you using Proxy Meshes or Proxy Scenes?

It is possible that the proxies are failing to resolve some textures used in the materials.
That might be the case if you've recently re-organized your computer or changed the system you're working on all together.

          Regards,
          Konstantin

Sorry for the tardy response but really busy at the moment. "Are you using Proxy Meshes or Proxy Scenes?" How do I check that, made them several weeks ago and just copy them in each time I need them. I did fix it in the end but it was a basic fix, deleted and purged out the offending proxies and copied them back in from another model that was behaving fine.

              Hi ason_cafferty ,

Identifying if an object is a Proxy Scene or a mesh is easy.
You can select it in the Asset Editor and in the header of the properties panel you'll see the type.
The two types also use different icons.
Additionally the Proxy Meshes require material assignments while the scenes contain materials within themselves.

I'm happy to hear you found a solution for your issue.
It would still be great if you can share an example scene with the black proxies so that we can investigate further.
There might be something we've missed that ca be fixed.

              Regards,
              Konstantin

Exactly the same thing happened to me, I checked if the materials and had disappeared. Check a previous backup that I had without the previous changes And there they were! What I had previously done was to change the translucency of a potted plant from Two-sided material to Thin-Walled.

                  Hi cajon49,

Do you remember what you did since saving the backup file (the one which is OK)?
Some more details will be required for us to determine what has happened.

Also, are the materials gone only in a new V-Ray version?
I mean, have you updated V-Ray before the issues started?

Lastly, it would be great if you can share some screenshots of the UI and the rendered result.
Sharing the problematic file might also help us find what's wrong.

                  Regards,
                  Konstantin
