  • Is it possible to add VDB Cloud Simulation in Vray 5 for Sketchup? Any Alternative Solution

    Hi,

I was trying to create some art in Vray 5 for Sketchup and I came across the VDB Cloud simulation feature in blender. Is this possible in Vray 5 for Sketchup or is there another alternative way to simulate or create clouds in Sketchup?

    Thanks

    Hi manishpaul_simon,

There is currently no way for volumetric caches to be loaded in V-Ray for SketchUp.
We can however add support for the volume grid loader available in other V-Ray integrations.
I'll log this as a feature request but it'll not high on the priorities list.

    Regards,
    Konstantin

      Sure thanks a lot.
Do you have plans to introduce the material slate editor in Vray for Sketchup?
      It'll be an amazing feature!

        Hi

Some Nice features that works with maya and 3d max don't work or isnt available for vray for sketchup, for example manishpaul_ Simón exposed some time ago that resumable rendering could be a great option and i think the same, for example vray dirt doesnt has the exclude option that vray for Maya and 3d max have, volume grid can be very helpfull i agree with manishpaul volume grid should have support for vray for sketchup.

Another great feature for Maya and 3d max was aces cg, we didnt have that option too, vray hair material is the same that vray 3 ( with vray for sketchup) it almost didnt change anything with years and with vray for Maya and 3d max vray hair material has a Lot of new options.

I don't care if i have to paid a little bit more for a better research and a better development of the software
Caustics are almost ready for vray for Maya and vray for 3d max, i really hope we can see this improvement at least with vray just to see how does it looks and then with vray gpu.

My Main concern is that we always have to ask for this or another development or a new feature that is great with other softwares but isnt available for vray for sketchup.

        Thanks

For example al Surface shader is not available for vray for sketchup and i don't complain about this, i complete understand that this shader is not usefull for vray for sketchup, since sketchup is not a software that makes characters or something similar (Like maya or 3d max does), is just more about spaces and architecture so is fine that we don't have this shader since no one uses sketchup to make characters, but this is not the same that vray fur and vray hair material, i use a Lot both features Vray fur and Vray hair material, for example a great variations of rugs, towel so this features are not getting some attention...

Vray resumable rendering is great!!! We can use that option too, for what ever reason if My renders fails in some point i can Even finish them with resumable rendering, another example is that if i want to go further with the noise level i can push with resumable rendering to get a better clean image.

So this is My personal feeling how sometimes we miss some features that works really Nice with Maya or 3d max

            Hi guys,

Do you have plans to introduce the material slate editor in Vray for Sketchup?
We do have plans to introduce a node material editor.
It is however a double-edged sword.
It will increase the complexity of our product and people will perceive it as even harder to learn and understand.

Some Nice features that works with maya and 3d max don't work or isnt available for vray for sketchup, for example manishpaul_ Simón exposed some time ago that resumable rendering could be a great option...
Implementing Resumable Rendering iv V-Ray for SketchUp is something we'll look into soon.
There are some workflow specifics that we need to figure out to provide the best possible UX.

and i think the same, for example vray dirt doesnt has the exclude option that vray for Maya and 3d max have, ...
This is another feature that we can enable once a good user workflow is designed.

Another great feature for Maya and 3d max was aces cg, ...
ACEScg is on the todo list.
There are however levels to which it can be exposed.
There is the global color space that V-Ray uses for its calculations - we will allow ACEScg here for sure.
There is however the texture management part which I'm not sure about - I would rather keep things simpler that what you have in Maya or Max in that regard.

vray hair material is the same that vray 3 ( with vray for sketchup) it almost didnt change anything with years and with vray for Maya and 3d max vray hair material has a Lot of new options.
Is there any particular option that you need?
Most of the new options are useful when rendering relatively long hair, something not possible in V-Ray for SketchUp at all.
I think that options like Melanin, Pheomelanin and Dye can be confusing for our users.
The old hair material works quite well for things like grass or carpets.

My Main concern is that we always have to ask for this or another development or a new feature that is great with other softwares but isnt available for vray for sketchup.
Our idea is not to make V-Ray for SketchUp an exact replica of V-Ray for 3ds Max.
And this is the main reason why some of the features don't make it in right away or never at all.
In fact there have been many new things introduced in V-Ray for SketchUp first.
The built-in material library was available since V-Ray 3.
We have introduced features like Vision, Light Gen, Scatter, etc.
There have been numerous workflow related improvements we also made - Balck-box Cosmos assets, quality settings slider, materials in the V-Ray proxy, vrmat asset management, native file path management, editable vrscene import and more.
Also note that V-Ray for Max (and the one in Maya) uses the native host-app UI and infrastructural framework.
We can't do such a thing in SketchUp. We basically have to create and maintain everything rendering-related ourselves.
And sometimes features get delayed by the fact we don't have a suitable UI component in place and we have to create one from scratch.

Thank you both for the feedback.
This kind of discussions are quite useful and help us improve the product.

            Regards,
            Konstantin

              Great thanks, Konstantin!
Either way, Vray for SketchUp is a great product and can be used by any new user quite easily. And keeping it simple is key just like how simple Sketchup is.
