  • Light gen in Vray for sketchup

Hi Konstantin, Muhhamed and Peter Chauchev

I am rendering some proyects and everything works ok, no single crash with vray gpu, im really happy with the development of vray and vray gpu.

I found very interesting light gen in heavy scenes since i can use it instead off interactive render... On heavy scenes interactive render suffer a Lot with vray gpu and sketchup hangs.

Light gen is a great tool, but the small varations that produces are very slow it takes like 15 or 10 min to generate Even 10 small images at 200 size.

I really hope a Nice upgrade of this tool, Also i would like see this tool more robust, more proffesional, and more práctical.

For example do You think in the future we can decide if this small renders can be calculated with gpu, if i'm using vray gpu.

At this moment is cpu which takes care of that or are the gpus.???

Light gen came with vray 5, i hope a progress on that tool, since architecs plays with the sun and how the lights and shadows dances inside a house or a Open space.

And about the parameter seed what does it mean???

And Also the small renders that show light gen come in a really bad Quality, sometimes i don't Even see how the light impact on spaces.

Is a great tool, but needs a refinement, a better development to uses more frequently.

    Thanks
    Best regards

Is not a great tool, is an awesome tool... I'm achieving an amazing effects with shadows and lights... On walls, floors... It is incredible how You can play with this tool... Amazing guys!!!

So maya and max have resumable rendering... But we have Light gen!!! 10 times better than resumable rendering... This is the first time that i use this tool... An i am amazed!!!

This gives a real depth on spaces since You can find with this tool what kind of light You want ( the Best light)... Im feeling this tool like a sublime shot of light and shadows...!!! Then You choose an awesome render that is proyected in the light gen.

Please make this tool as powerfull as it can be!!!

    Thanks
    Best regards Luis Gamino

So the light gen already gives You a kind of exposure value for any kind of scenario... Thats Nice too... Just one thing if this scenarios as small thumnails can be with better Quality or select 2 or 1 that You must liked and it would ve Nice if this thumnails can be like in progressive render, keep refinement just to see how it looks already in the Light gen, interactive render with vray gpu is not the Best option it suffers a Lot on heavy scenes... But light gen can do this Even better
Also You can see a variaty of skys in Open spaces, so You choose natural light, shadows and skys.

Also if this keeps refinement we can see how is the small thumnail and if You see an error for what ever reason You can avoid the small thumnail, erase the mistake and then... launch the final render.

      Cheers!!!

        Here is an example...

The small renders are at really bad Quality and is very slow with cpu, it would be Nice if we can choose the gpu to make this small renders.

With this bad Quality is difficult to choose a Nice option

          Hello, Luis,

Thank you for thе extensive feedback!
Allow me to address your points one by one.

Firstly, calculating LightGen using V-Ray GPU is something we are still considering but for the time being this will not be allowed as it complicates the otherwise simplistic experience. Sooner or later these workflow limitations will be cleared, though.

The quality of each thumbnail depends on the scene itself as the render process stops after a pre-set amount of time and then either the NVIDIA AI Denoiser or Intel Open Image Denoise is used to extensively smooth out the rough output.
Cases when the LightGen scenario calculation takes an abnormal amount of time might be due to the initial phases of the render process - geometry parsing and export, loading of assets (possibly from network locations), etc.
To determine what is the exact cause of the slowdown you mentioned, please provide us with an example project (using the V-Ray > Pack Project function) by uploading its archive to https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and addressing it in the message box directly to me.
If it is something extreme, our devs will devote some time to consider further optimizations.

Having more refined scenario thumbnails is something the dev team may explore. For the time being, though, it is not something that can be provided as a direct trade-off between render time and quality. As I mentioned, lighting scenarios of specific projects may take minutes to load all scene assets or geometry while the render process itself always takes only seconds.

Last but not least, if your issues with SketchUp hanging during interactive GPU rendering persist, please let me know (using the Chaos Support form) and me and my colleagues will directly assist you.

Once again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!

          Kind regards,
          Peter
