  • How Do you: Create Materials

Okay so this is what I've found out so far.

    To create a material:

    1. Click the 'M' to go to the material creator
    2. There's already a "default vray material" I leave that there in case I want to see original settings. So I right click Scene Materials -> Add Materials
    3. Expand the new material folder and you get
    a. Emissive Layers (emit light)
    b. Reflection Layers (reflect light)
    c. Diffuse Layers (diffuse light)
    d. Refraction Layers (refract light)
    4. Right click one of these layers and then click Add Layer if you want your material to have one or more of these propoerties.

Okay so this is where I get stuck. How would I create a translucent material. like a glass. I'm trying to train myself before the next release and I'd like to know what to do before hand.

      How Do you: Create Materials

I've been knee deep in it all day. I'm trying to mess around with some settings to get similar results, It's just taking a good while.

        How Do you: Create Materials

To create a simple glass you would ( this starts inside the material editor - I assume you get this far )

        1. right-click on "Scene Materials"
        2. Click add new material
        3. Add a refraction layer
        4. Set the transparency of the diffuse layer to be Gray( 128,128,128 )
        5. Apply the material to the object you wish

Its important to understand the layering system that we have. The order of the layers in the material is the order that light rays will be traced. Therefore if you have an opaque layer at the top of the shader the light will not reach the layers beneath it.

excellent Joe, thank you. I finally got to a point where I understood the tutorial yesterday and started working it out. That layer info is nice to have though. Much like PhotoShop
