  • vray rhino gallery

i was browsing those gallery in vray rhino, i got blownup. there are a lot of quality images there. unfortunately i dont know anything about that software. i have use max and vis before then shifted to su for all these architectural modelling, from then on i stuck with SU. Rhino- honestly no idea.

it seems vray and rhino compatibility is already there and a lot of interest with this. vray and su seems slow. but with that kind of quality vray can do, wow very exciting. i hope many more people will evaluate and have an active exchanges through this forum to learn from each other.

    Re: vray rhino gallery

I agree. The Rhino people seem to spend a lot of time on the fine detail and it is reflected in the quality of their renders, many of which are awesome. I guess that sketchup is good and fast at what it does - architectural work, but Rhino does allow much more refined manipulation of forms. They also don't seem to have the bump map issue (!). I have downloaded an evaluation copy, but the learning curve looks a bit daunting, and it is yet another set of commands to learn, which I can't justify for the type of work I am involved in. In the meantime I will continue to admire their work in the Rhino forum.

It seams odd to say, but the modeling capabilities of rhino allow it to create much more realistic/high quality renders. The capabilites of vray in rhino and su are almost exactly the same right now, so its not that there is anything different in Rhino. Since the things that really set images apart are the details then being able to easily get those details into the model really gives rhino the edge. Thats not to say that it can't be done in SU. Take a look at the violin render that has been floating around for a while. I'm pretty sure that that is a very detailed model, and it is reflected in the quality of the render (although setting up renders requires talent as well). I'd say take the time to try and get as much of the details in the model, then see if the quality of renders increases...and I'm sure that it would.

On another note Rhino is actually pretty easy to learn. It works much like AutoCAD and has a bunch of support out there as well. So if you really want, give it a try. Hey...at least you'll already know vray ;D

        Re: vray rhino gallery

I would say the major difference between our Rhino and SketchUp plugins is that Rhino is built to cater to rendering plugins - whereas SketchUp doesn't necessarily have such things in mind out-of-the-box. It takes a little more coaxing to get some things done. As V-Ray for SketchUp matures I think the gap will close between the two, because functionally, they are essentially identical. The differences are largely just the differences between SketchUp and Rhinoceros.

          Re: vray rhino gallery

at least there is always bright future out there. i just dont know if i will have time trying rhino. if i will crave for more realism later maybe i will go back to max or vis. but thanks to all of you guys. like cauldwell, we will continue in dealing with su. one thing realy what i dont like in su are those faceted plane on the curve space. if i will use 3ds imported to su, then it begins to slow down my machine.. so on that note, su does not cater my need. but on quick presentation to someone, su is always reliable. :-\

Yes- it seems like Sketchup uses face normals for vert normals. So everything is very faceted. I think one thing I will need to do in the future is calculate my own vertex normals and try to smooth things out.
