  • basic material question

I am completely new to material texture mapping. I downloaded some of the materials from the ASGVIS website. In the material editor I imported the new vismat file associated with that material and inserted the "d" png in the diffuse map slot and the "b" in the bump map slot. U and V values for both maps are identical. All other settings are the defaults.

The preview of the material (blurry wood #7) shows up fine in the materials editor. But when applied to a simple flat surface in sketchup only the general material color (in this case brown) comes through when rendered... no surface texture or color pattern at all... just even brown and perfectly smooth. Changing the U and V values priduces no difference in the renderings.

    What am I missing here?

The downloadable manual only seems to talk about Vray linked materials based on what I guess are the sketchup bitmaps.

    thanks,

    Gunnar

    Re: basic material question

The difference is uv information most likely. If you are using "Explicit map channel" as your uv type then you need to have a Sketchup material applied to the object. This is because Sketchup only generates uv information if a Sketchup texture is applied to it. We will be modifying this behavior in our future releases to integrate more with the Sketchup mapping tools, but currently that is the workaround.

      Ok, thanks.

So it looks like the best way to use the ASG textures I downloaded from the site is to import the diffuse map as a sketchup texture, apply it rotate and scale it to my liking, create a new vray linked material to that sketchup material and then apply the bumpmap and reflection settings there.

So does the vismat file included in most of the downloaded textures serve any purpose?

        Re: basic material question

The vismat is the material itself. That's what your downloading - the textures are just things that are referenced by the material.

I had this problem too...If you have group in group(or components in group and other hardly grouping) you can see that textures on faces are smooth(or seems that it isn't completely). i explode some elements(in model) and i can see these texture(so i can see bumps, displ-t-maps in render too)

I'll see if I can track the cause of that down.
