  • Best way to render reveals?

I have not found a way to render reveals with lines like I have in the past with rendering polylines from autocad into Max. What is the best way to represent reveals in Vray SU?

Sorry - I'm not sure what you mean by reveals. I haven't heard that term before. But if you mean some kind of toon-line, or wireframe rendering, we don't have that implemented yet.

I think he is speaking of architectural reveals... minute recesses in stone or a wall, etc where the materials are joined together or there is a graphic recess to catch shadow.

I have experimented a bit with this and I think you need to choose your approach on a case by case basis.

If the rendering is design to be seen from a distance and there are a lot of reveals it might pay you to design a custom texture with the reveals included. That is assuming there is a discernible repeat to the reveal pattern.

If you don't have a pattern that repeats or you have a complicated surface to which you are applying the pattern, you might be better off modeling the reveals in sketchup.

Maybe someone with more architectural rendering experience has some pointers?

If the reveals are simple recesses in a facade (?), then I can't imagine why you would not model them. Then whatever view you have, vray will always give you the correct render.
It would also help if you could post an image etc so that we can be sure what you mean.
In general the more detail you can put in a model the better it will look, however, obiously it depends on the scale of the thing and you need to model accordingly.
