You don't say if this is an internal or an external scene. If it is external then they will be being drowned out by the sun!! I am assuming it is internal, and if so then rectangular lights should show up - and the light source (ie the light rectangle) can be made visible or invisible (a toggle in the light menu).
This is an example of sunlight + internal lights (light sources not visible)

Re: problems with using default lights
the scene i am rendering is an external perspective. But the lights i want to see are internal to a building of the perspective. So i have been using the default lights with a camera to light the exterior and rectangular lights for the interior. any suggestions for more effecient methods to accomplish this?

Re: problems with using default lights
oh...I thought you said that you had a physical camera and that solved your issue. Whats happening is that energy from those lights you added is not enough to appear with the exposure settings of the Physical Camera. You will need to increase the intensity of the lights until they apear in your rendering. If the rec lights are small you might have to increase them a bit, but larger ones not so much.Damien Alomar<br />Generally Cool Dude

Re: problems with using default lights
If this helps . . .
This scene was rendered with:
- physical camera on
- sky on (sun size multiplier set to 10) - to get soft shadows (no external rectangular lights)
- there are some large rectangular lights at the back of the shop with the 'intensity multiplier' set to 200 (so offices for instance would require something brighter to show up)

Its in - render option - environment - GI(Skylight) - 'M' - select 'sky', then you will see 'size multiplier' - increase this to between 10 and 15 and it softens the edges of the shadows. In the same menu is 'intensity multiplier'. I haven't adjusted this but I think it controls the power of the sun. All this to be used with the physical camera for best effect.
