  • copy pasting geometry to a new file confuses Vray

    Hi all,

sometimes I feel the need to copy/paste the geometry of a model in to a new file and render from there.
However, Vray get's confused by it and renders most textures as a plain black color.
I don't expect that Vray material settings would be transferred to the new file, but I kind of hoped that the Su materials (without extra Vray properties assigned) would keep the correct textures and uv-position.

    Any thoughts?

I think we are going to transition the way we deal with materials. I think we need to start using dummy sketchup materials and attach our V-Ray stuff as user data to those mats. That way I think it would get transferred with the geometry/component IIRC. Plus there would be the added benefit of at least some kind of basic viewport approximation of the V-Ray material.

I'm in the process of reworking the way we deal with some of the geometry and material pipeline right now actually - this issue is one of the concerns on my list.

        Biebel,

SU has somewhat "creative" ways of making/dealing with geometry. Its possible that copying and pasting the geometry has disregarded something like the face or vertex normals. In which case the face may "exist" but when it comes to the information that is required to shade that face is not there, so thats why it ends up black. That's at least my possible explanation on what could be going on. I personally have seen this before, but can't remember exactly when, where, or how. Hope that helps.

joe, this is a very good news. as most of us are satisfied with the rendering but not really the mapping issue. really glad to hear this.
