  • Noise in my LC

When I render in preset settings of Light cache. My render output shows a strange noise in my shadows and light collord materials. What can I do about this.

Please post an example of the noise you are referring to. I believe I know what you're running into, but would like to see where the noise is happening.

        Re: Noise in my LC

Good thing you posted because that wasn't what I was expecting. I don't believe that the noise is coming from LC. Because LC is a blurring method rarely are LC artifacts described as "noise", but it will most likely appear as splotchiness or something like that. If you're using the presets the only ones that actually use LC are the ones that are using QMC for primary bounces. QMC is where the noise really looks like its coming from. Ultimately to get rid of this noise will require some more sampling in one of a few different areas, which may wind up taking quite a long time. The other option, one that will get you "smoother" results is using Irradiance Map for primaries instead of QMC.

If you want to go with IR then I'd suggest playing around with it a little bit if you're not that familiar with it (the IR presets are a good place to start...don't forget HSubd as quality control as well).

If you want to stick with QMC then I'd suggest you start at the top of the following list and then work down. Again the renderings may begin to take longer.

        1. I believe you're running with Adaptive Subdivsion for your AA settings. Switch over to Adaptive QMC (it works better with QMC for primaries). Once you do that, start increasing the max rate until things start to smooth out (should start to happen at around 18, but may need 32 or more depending on how smooth you want the result)

        2. Start to decrease the Noise Threshold (in the QMC sampler). This is going to be a very effective way, but will affect all of the calculations of the image. So its best to try to smooth things out with AA first. The default Noise value is .01 and the practical lower limit is .001. So try out .05 and see if that decreases some of your noise.

        3. Lastly you can increase the number of QMC subdivisions. I've found this to be one of the least effective ways to decrease then noise, but if you feel that it might work, then go ahead.

*Word to the wise...while experimenting with different settings its best to try and only have 1 affect your scene at the same time.
