Make a 2D face as big as your texture needs to be. Then put the face above the roof where you textue needs to be. Place your texture on the 2d face and make it projected. Explode yourroof until you have the faces of your roof. Pick the texture from your 2d face and then pick your roof. The texture will be projected on the face of the roof. On the sides the texture will probably stretch out. You can cut the faces of your roof in smaller pieces and repeat the poces for every piece.
This works for me.
( the texture gets repeated on the otherside of your model too!) So if you have a cilinder and project a texture on one side, the opposite side gets the texture as well!!) If you want to make a texture on a cilinder all around I cut the cilinder in 4 pieces and project 2 textures, one from the front and one fom the side. This is mostly enough to texture map a cilinder in Sketchup.)
