  • Brick Texture

    Afternoon all,

I am trying to get the red_brick_worn material from the download material to work on a render and alas, Nothing.....not even a mortar joint let alone a brick or even a course of bricks! I am perplexed to say the least.

If anyone has a brick texture which they could post, or failing that explain to me what I'm doing wrong that would be great!

I hope someone out there is kind enough to hep me in this matter.

    Kind regards

    Mat Best

    Hi Mat

You need to map your texture in sketchup first and scale it,then you can make the linked material to VRay.

Go here http://www.brick.com/md/index.htm and download this and you will be able to get all of the bricks and block you want ;D.

      Re: Brick Texture

      Evening RonS,

So if i create a material using this program and scale, then link the red brick worn to it theoretically I should produce a well scaled brick render....

I worked out how to produce the brick texture from the Material download section however I feel the scale is a little off, in the VRAY Material setting how do I expand the scale of the JPEG to produce a larger brick which is to scale?

I really appreciate your help in this matter, and anyone else's thoughts!

        Re: Brick Texture

Its easy, count the brick courses in your texture, and if each course is say 75mm then its 75mm x number of courses. in sketchup, in the materials roll-out, edit the texture and re-size it so that it is this new height.

          Re: Brick Texture

In Vray I opened up the Material editor (M Icon in the skippy toolbar) selected the texure then went to the linked material and changed it U and V size but still seems too small or the tiling looks uber pants.

I will keep trying and figure out how to post images so a few screen grabs can go on, I'm sure when I have sussed this with all you guys helped me I will rename this thread, Idiots guide to scaling a Vray Material....brought to you by a complete tool!

Again thanks for all your help chaps,

          M

            Re: Brick Texture

Do not try to set the size in the vray material editor - its extremely difficult.
On the other hand it is very easy in sketchup. Set the size in the sketchup material editor - it then feeds the information to vray when you render - it works fine.

              David,

Really appreciate your help, does it need to be a linked material? from the skippy to the Vray material I would presume so I will check this out when the old timer in the office gets off the rendering machine!

              Sweet

                Re: Brick Texture

No, it doesn't need to be a linked material, but if it is linked then you can add bump, reflection layers etc.
The other thing is that a current bug in vray means that once you have applied a vray or vray linked material to a surface, the only way of removing it (other than starting afresh) is to assign a new vray or vray linked material to that surface.
Brick is a material that you may want to add bump to if it is a close-up view.
If bump (or reflection) is not required then easiest procedure is just to use the ordinary sketchup materials - or sketchup textures you have made.

                  Re: Brick Texture

                  hey there

                  just jumping in
couple of questions though regarding using the vismat materials.

if you don't need bump, reflections, etc. just use the texture in SU?
if however you do require a bump map (for a close up) should you then link your texture applied material from SU to vray? does vray automatically align the bump map with the texture in the SU material?

last thing. when you apply a vismat like arch glass in vray you can only see it when it renders. do you just apply a default glass in SU and then link it to the vismat?

                  thanks in advance

                  love this program

                    Yes

                    Yes, Yes
Glass - The method I use (not necessarily correct, but works for me!) is to apply a default sketchup glass, so that it displays as glass in sketchup, but then apply a vismat glass (unlinked). The reason I do this is because I found that the diffuse map from the linked glass always made the glass look grey and muddy.

                    Good Luck

                      David,

Really appreciate your time and patience in this thread, I think I may have cracked it thanks to you.

Now I just need Vray to stop freaking out on me when I try and load a .Vismat (Corey and the peeps are looking into this) I will see what I can do and maybe post a few visuals.

                      Thank you again David.

                      Kind Regards

Mat (Getting to the top of the hill, its all down hill from here!)
