  • License used up simply starting SketchUp

We've run into problem with the network licensing of VRay for SketchUp. I've got VRay for SketchUp (net license) installed on two workstations. I can launch SketchUp and render on one and quit. I can launch SketchUp and render on the second workstation and quit. However, if I launch SketchUp on the first machine (with just a blank scene) when I try to start SketchUp on the second machine I get a network license error. Is this the expected behavior? I can't imagine why it would check out a VRay license even if a workstation isn't rendering with VRay...

Currently, this is the way the software has been designed to work. The V-Ray plugin is loaded when you start SketchUp, and to load the plugin, you need a license. We've had a couple people mention that they would like an "activate" and "deactivate" option of some sort, so that they don't have to worry about which machine they open SketchUp on first.

    For example:

Let's say there's a lab of 10+ computers, and they all have SketchUp and V-Ray for SketchUp installed on them. They're all using floating licenses, and you have 5 licenses, because only half of the people using SketchUp ever need to render at any given time. If everyone using those workstations opened SketchUp, they would all be trying to check out a license from the floating license manager. The licenses would be given out on a first come-first server basis, so if you weren't careful about who opened SketchUp first, you might end up with some users that need to render, not being able to use V-Ray because all of the licenses have already been checked out.

This can be a bit of an issue in certain situations. We may not be able to add a activation/deactivation system in this upcoming release, but it has been added to the feature request list for upcoming versions.

Has there been change to this?
We just obtained a floating license as there's a few people at the office that like to use V-Ray, but it's used very rarely. However, SU is used often so it's not very good that it's a first some first serve basis.
Making everyone close down their SU only to get the right person to get the license is very awkward.

Re: License used up simply starting SketchUp

Devin posted a batch file that renamed the vfs ruby plugin so that it wouldn't be loaded when SU started up. I don't know whether that was here on the forum or something internal, but I'll try and track it down.

That's ok. I just move the vray ruby to a subfolder and write a script that loads it on demand. That way I get a UI form SU.
Just checking to see if where was a more elegant solution.

Too bad SU plugins can't be unloaded during runtime...

Thanks for that info Dalomar. We have encountered the same problem. Where can we get the script?

I will be posting an update to my V-Ray Toys plugin very soon that will allow you to do this from within SU. Just want to test it a bit first before I release it.
