  • Crash when I render a big size rendering?? please help!!

I tried to render a scene with SU 6 & Vray for SU. When i tried to set the output size over 2000 width, My SU crashed @ the second pass. Why? can someone give a little advice to me here. P.S. it renders ok when the size is around 1500 width. So weird!!! Please help!!

Its not a bug and its actually not that weird either. Rendering at high resolutions takes more memory then at a screen resolution. As we all know, if you run out of memory, then things will crash. When you run out of memory depend on your system, the scene, maps/materials, and your resolution.

The best thing to do with high resolution is to clean things up...keep only the geometry in the scene that you need, downsize textures that are bigger than you need (copies though), and keep other drains on memory to a minimum. The other thing to do is to render out to a vrimage. The main drain with hi res is the final rendering itself. Some large images can be gigs in and of themselves. Vrimage helps getting around that by writing the file to the hard disk as its rendered. This prevents the final rendering from taking memory away from the actual memory process. You will have to convert the final image to an OpenEXR, but thats fairly simple. Check the large resolution tutorial in the support section for more details or post if you have further questions.

yea..i tried the vrimage. it wasnt a pleasant experience, but looks like it's the only way to do that. If I want to upgrade my hardwarein order to render high Res image, should I just upgrade the RAM?

        Thanks!!

Upgrading RAM may help, but it may not. If you only have 1 gb or less, then yes it will help. If you already have 2 gb, then there really isn't much you can do. You can try adding a 3rd gb, but in order for that to matter you will have to use a 3gb switch. And once you've got that working that may not actually help with SU because I don't believe it is compiled with Large Address Aware (ie the thing that allows you to use the 3rd gb).

I'm not sure what issues you've had with VRimage, but as long as you have the converter, it should be fairly easy to work with. What did you run into?

i got the converter thing all figured out. But the image doesnt look as sharp as the one I rendered from Vray. I feel like something was lost in the converting process.

Chances are the gamma of the image is uncorrected causing it to display lighter than your used to seeing. Just simply open the exr in photoshop or something and change the gamma to 2.2

there's no data being lost because vrimage retains ALL of the render information from Vray. Including all of the channels, regardless if they were specified for the render or not.
