  • HDR + SUN: possible?

    Hi Vray people,

I often use HDRI background in combo with the physical sun in fry render.
Would this be possible in VfSU as well?

    Thanks in advance,

    Biebel

I didn't manage to get it working with the original release, but in SR1 I did. Using and HDRI for your GI and enabling default lights.
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

its also possible in the original release but it works like lights while having the physical camera enabled u have to bump the multiplier up to nitice it, 5000 works for me

        Hi Freeagent,
Indeed when the HDR is loaded in the background slot.
But not when loaded in the environment slot, right?
Like a real contribution to the light and colors in the scene and at the same time having direct physical sun.

          Re: HDR + SUN: possible?

If you've managed to get the original version working with an HDRI for GI with SU SUN shadows I'd be very happy to see an example file, because I can't get it to work at all.

I have sketchup shadows on, and the 'default lights' as well.

              Stefan,
I see, but was your hdri map loaded in the 'environment' slot or the 'background' slot.
If it is the background slot, the hdri will not contribute to the light and just serve as back drop and for reflections.I was looking for a mean to actually have the HDR contribute in the lighting in a combo with Sun/sky.

Also, which Vray version are you using?

                Re: HDR + SUN: possible?

I'm using the original release, and I have the HDRI file in both slots (environment and background). Since I started to use HDRI for illumination, my renders became decent,so every time I push the render button, I have HDRI in both slots, even if I have interiors. It's too bad that we loose the control over the sun size, and we can get those nice soft shadows from the sun. I try to simulate the direct light with omni light and rect. light, but the omni always burned my render, and rect. light...looks wrong.

another example, first pic with HDRI in both slots( environment and background), and the second, like the first one plus the sketchup shadows on , and the default lights checked.

                    stefanq,
let me get this right, in the second image you have hdri in both slots (GI & BG) ?!
Because when i do the same, including default lights on and the SU shadows turned on, i always got soft shadows like in your first image. :

40th, that it's what I did, you get it right. You can download the scene and see for yourself.
Thomas, I packed the scene, and also the visopt and the hdri file that I used.
                        This it's the link :

                          stefanq,
After testing the scene i found what dissabled the SU shadows: Physical Camera
And i always use the physical camera.
it's too bad that i can't combine all together- Physical Cam. + HDRI GI + Hdri background + SU shadows  :'(
