  • What's the best way to create a lamp material?

    Hey guys!

I've been googling about a method to recreate the kind of effect that can be seen here: http://aptoverde.deviantart.com/art/...edMtl-57950477, but i found very little about it except it should be done with the Vray2SidedMtl.

I was wondering where could i find more information about this or about any other better method to make such an effect, since the Vray manual itself doesn't really go much further into it.

    Thanks in advance!

I have tried to create this before with some difficulty.

This time I started with a 'milk' vismat, adjusted it, tested it and posted it in the materials section:

    http://asgvis.com/index.php?option=c...ileinfo&id=562

It lets enough light thro to glow, but you can't see thro it. It looks good with a vray light inside

I put a 400 lumen onmilight inside it and it looks good. I hope it works for you.

    Regards

      Thanks for the reply, mate!

I've tried to use your shade but i got a "Invalid material file" error when importing... i wonder what could be going on.

Any thoughts on this matter will be very welcome.

      Thanks guys!

It should work, I've just downloaded and tested it again.
You need to downloaded it and save it to your vray materials folder.
In SU create a material - say 'translucent' and apply it to your lampshade, then in Vray materials select 'translucent' and then 'import' the saved vismat.
Of course, all this assumes you are using the latest release - 01.05.03

        It looks like this:

So how exactly can you make such lampshade materials?
the download didn't work for me either.
Is it just a translucent material or a 2sided material effect? ???

As I said in this thread, the lampshade has thickness (so this is not a double sided material). As some people seem to have difficulty downloading this (!) here are the settings:

(I started with the 'milk' vismat)
There should be a refraction layer with the following settings
            Glossiness 0.2
            IOR 1
            Subdivs 8
            Translucent - checked
            Thickness 1000
            Fog 50

            Good luck

              David,

Downloaded fine, made lampshade 1mm thick, imported your lampshade vismat, omni light 200 lumens (inverse), physical camera shutter speed 1/1000, f stop 8, ISO 200, worked perfectly first time.

Thanks for this extremely useful vismat David!

I'm glad it worked for you - I was beginning to wonder if it only worked for me!
