I was wondering if anyone can answer my question. I recently did a residential project for school and did all my renders in v-ray. All the students loved them but the teachers didn't. The renders weren't recieved well by any of them and I don't understand why.

Re: why do my proffs hate 3d renders
There's usually 2 reasons, one good and one bad. The good one is that many architectural tutors believe that students are "missing the point" i.e. the process of designing buildings shouldn't really have anything to do with rendering and as such it's a distraction from the core subject. The bad reason is that many arch tutors are old technophobes who, realising that they will never get to grips with even basic CAD designing (excuse the tautology) subconsciously take out their frustration on talented young students trying to develop the skills which they absoultely require to be employable in the "real world".
Regards,
Jackson
p.s. actually, there is also a third reason: tutors tend to judge things on their merits, i.e. a good pencil sketch is always better than a bad photorealistic render. Why not ask your tutors? Maybe they can give you some tips on what they would prefer to see.SU 2018 + VfSU 4.0

Re: why do my proffs hate 3d renders
Thanks for your comments Jackson. I think you hit the nail on the head. My proffs have been telling me I will never do renders such as these out in the real world because a client will never pay for it. I don’t think they realise how fast these renders can be done once you become efficient. They also told me that 3d renders are cold and that they will never achieve the depth a pencil sketch will. They would prefer me to master my drawing skills. It’s weird....I think my renders actually had a negative impact on my project. My fellow students went nuts over the renders and thought they were the coolest thing ever. It really makes me mad because my proffs don’t understand the time and effort I’ve put in to learning how to use this incredible software. They think I’m cheating in some way.

My advice would be to give them what they want (print out line perspectives and trace and shade them on a lightbox), but for God's sakes keep working on rendering in your spare time as I can tell your straight out that it increases your employability ten fold. Play the game by their rules to get the grades, but don't let your tutors get in the way of your education!SU 2018 + VfSU 4.0

Re: why do my proffs hate 3d renders
I'm an architecture graduate and I understand how you feel.I've been practicing and sharpening my computer skills for about two years now since I've graduated from school. But I still feel the discrimination of my work by my professors.Recently I went to
our college to organize a review program for our board exam only to be insulted by my professors saying I will never pass the exam because we use computers and cad in the company I'm working with(even though I was a scholar back then). Its really sad because I had very high respect for them when I was still a student. How I wish I could tell them that Architecture isn't about the medium you use,It's about translating your ideas to reality in any way possible...
