  • Two instalations of V-Ray, different version?

Is it possible to have the old V-Ray version installed along side the new version?

When I tried SU7 it installed side by side SU6. So can I use different V-Ray version for each of the SU versions?

The reason why I want to do this is that I have some older projects made with original V-Ray which might still require a few renders in the future. But I'd like to make use of the new SU and new V-Ray for new projects.
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

With different versions of SU, yes...with one version, no. Since SU doesn't give us any way to control loading or unloading our plugin, we would have to manage two versions of V-Ray running along side each other, which would be pretty much impossible.

I now have SU6 installed and SU7. No problem there. The old VfSU is installed to SU6. And I just tried to install VfSU SR1.5 to SU7, but the installer promts: "An older installation has been detected, it must be removed to continue." So, no go there...

          Thom,

I tried repeatedly to install VfSU 1.05.02 in the SU7 Betas while keeping VfSU v.1.00 in SU6, cleaning and editing my registry and restarting over and over again, but couldn't. The VfSU licensing setup just didn't want to allow 2 versions of VfSU to run concurrently. It's a pain as I also wanted to make a gentle switchover from VfSU v.1. to SR1.5 with it's different multipliers and materials setup, but I just had to take the plunge and switch straight over to SR1.5 in SU7. I also couldn't get old v.1 saved Linked Materials to load into SR1.5. properly (they were uneditable in SR1.5) so it's a very good idea to take screenshots or notes of your favourite VfSU material setups as you'll likely need to set them up from scratch in SR1.5

Yea, it would certainly be a considerable issue to have that work ;D

I don't need them both to be running at the same time. Using one at a time is fine. But I can't install both, because the new version wants to remove the old one even before I specify where to install it.

So I understand you can't run them both, but can they both be installed. If so, how do I circumvent the new version's desire to uninstall the old.

Sorry guys, I should have been more careful with my words... I meant they cannot be installed concurrently... at least it was beyond my abilities. Maybe with some serious registry editing, but I'm guessing that would violate VfSU's licensing.

I just tried and it doesn't seam like its possible. Although the error that I'm getting is rather odd (its can't seem to find a file thats exactly where its looking for it). It does seam to run under SU7 fine though, so...

Ok. I can always set up a virtual machine for them old projects where I just need to do minor tweaks and render. MS offer complete solution for free now anyway. Think I can salvage a XP license from an old computer.

I just upgraded to SU 7Pro. So basically I would need to uninstall the vfsu I have directed at SU6 and reinstall it to point to SU7? Is this correct? Vray will only work on one or the other?

Yes. Though it was announced today that ASGVis will make a new installer that allow two SU versions each with VfSU installed.
