  • Can't disable all lights [1.05.03]

I have made an interior model with some rectangular lights. I wanted to quickly disable them to see how the render looked without light. But unticking Light, Hidden Lights and even Default Lights in General Switches doesn't do anything.

    What am I missing?

      Your psychic powers are strong.

Yes I have enabled them. But I would have though that they'd get excluded from the IR calculation then. I'm not reusing any old IR maps.

Yes the force is strong in me ;D

Well what Store with Irradiance Map does is switch over all of the Rec Light calculation to be a GI calculation not a standard direct light calculation. So they won't be affected by turning off those direct light calculations. This also means that most of the rec lights energy will lie within the second bounces, since what would have been a direct light calculation will now be part of the primary bounces.

Didn't quite understand that one. How come the energy will lie within secondary when they're being calculated by primary?

Light in V-Ray is calculated in three components...Direct light (this is a simple calculation that's done in almost any 3d program or display), Primary bounce (the first light bounce after the direct light calculation is done), and Secondary bouncs (all subsequent bounces of light). The first one is a standard calculation and the subsequent two are Indirect calculations. Since the Store with Irradiance Map option treats the rec lights as GI, no Direct Light calculations are performed. Therefore, the standard energy that would have been calculated directly is now part of Primary bounces. There's no where for what would have been the primary bounce to go other than the Secondary bounces, so it kind of adds a "pre-bounce". Earlier bounces have more energy, so thats why the Secondary bounces will have more light energy when Store with Irradiance Map is enabled.
