  • Render Options Explained

    Hey,

I was hoping to start a thread to get help explaining the various render settings, I was going to start off with the Global Switches & System Tabs and work from there. Unfortunately I don't know what all the settings are for so was looking for the community to help out, I think this could help everyone understand V-ray a bit better. I have numbered each setting, so if you guys know what they are for please post......

    Re: Render Options Explained

You can find explanation of those settings in this online V-Ray manual: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150R1/

Most of the stuff in your screenshot is explained under the section of Global Switches: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150R...s_switches.htm
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

        Re: Render Options Explained

Spot 3d is great and has a wealth of information, BUT....don't start at the top. Global switches doesnt' really affect to much (more of an On/Off sort of relationship), and there's nothing in the system tab thats of any real use (I highly doubt you want me to talk to you about binary space partitioning trees). Start at something valuable, like Irradiance Map or Light Cache, then work your way back towards the stuff you never need to touch. Illumination engines are a big factor...from there you can dig through AA stuff and camera settings. Then maybe color mapping or something. Those system settings should be the LAST thing you worry about.

LOL, Damien you gave me an idea. Obviously you guys are working on a new GUI, but what if someone was to edit the current GUI so the parameters or tabs which are most important to most people are shaded green while others are orange, yellow or red? I guess it was my background in Vue and Maxwell which made it fairly easy to identify the most important parameters to start experimenting with (although I am still learning all the time- see recent Adaptive Amount discussion!), but for those unfamiliar with render programs every V-Ray parameter seems just as relevant as another to begin with.

Or we could just take that useless stuff out all together . Even with colors people will still be over whelmed with information. Stripped down and simple is much better...cleaner and more organized. Putting colors with settings is most likely going to turn our UI into a Christmas tree...and then what do the colors mean...and its destracting...and what if I'm color blind.

I just meant as a mod stopgap, naturally the new stripped down GUI is the best way to go.

Then maybe 3D visualization is not the ideal career choice! LOL

We're trying to cut out the half cooked fixes...they generally do more harm than good, require just about as much effort as to just fix the actual problem, require a second effort to do things the way they really should, and confuse people along the way.

Besides, we're moving towards a new rapid GUI paradigm anyway...partly because dealing with our current UI is so labor intensive. From the ground up it will all get some well deserved attention.

Yeah taking out all the stuff we don't need to touch would be a big help............

                        Re: Render Options Explained

I put this together over the summer, but this would be an example of the "Christmas Tree" affect...to give you a hint most people would only really need to care about the green and possibly yellow. Most UI components would be less "colorful" than this, but far too much of our UI is orange and red (the more advanced colors)...take those settings out and you've trimmed the fat by about 65-70%
