  • [Plugin] Blackout (1.2.0) - Material masking tool

    Mirror thread: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/...?f=180&t=15790

This plugin was made on request from Free Agent which wanted a script that turned all materials black so he could then make one material white and render out a material mask for post processing. Hence the name.

I later added another function that picked the material of a selected and turned that white and the rest black, just to make it a little bit more quicker to set it up.

NOTE! Run this script on a backup file!!!
This script removes all textures, and opacity and modifies the colour. While the operation is undoable it's all to easy to accidentally save the file. (I press Ctrl+S regularly as a habit.)

Plugin is operated from the Plugin menu. "Blackout" and "Mask Material"

    Tested against SU6 & 7

    ---

    Update 1.2.0:
Free Agent had a got idea: use the current material instead of the selected object's material. Added this new function.

    BUMP!

I completely missed this post and ruby, only found out about it when someone mentioned it elsewhere and I searched for it.

    Thomthom,

Another great VfSU tool- couldn't this be integrated into your "V-Ray Toys" sticky thread?

          ? V-Ray doesn't recognize the material change?

Re: [Plugin] Blackout (1.2.0) - Material masking tool

it recognizes all the materials going black, but with that mask material function, it doesnt see the selected material as white, u need to go into the material editor and change the diffuse to white.

remon: say u have a large facade with alot of glass and mullions, u use blackout, turn everything black, then change the glass material to white, the in global settings turn off all reflection and maps, then only render out a diffuse channel, then u can load that into photoshop to use as a selection tool for the glass... waaaaaaaaaay easier than lasoo-ing every pane

hmm... How odd that it doesn't recognize the white.... I will have to look into that.

Sean: I see the behaviour. But I found a work around. The thing is - right after the script changes the materials, V-Ray doesn't regonize the changes yet. It's lagging behind. If you do something, like draw a line and then remove it - then V-Ray get synced up and the mask renders correctly.

I'd say silly SU - because of faulty and lacking API...

If it's not complex geometry object (like window's glass faces), i preffer to use Thom's Vry toys plugin.
I just export a B&W image which fits perfect vrays output image and the quickly select with PS's "magic wand" tool surfaces that needed to be selected.

But for more complex objects i think this ruby will suit better.

Thank you Thom for all your work! which makes life's vfsu users much easier ! Very much appreciated.

That's not the most accurate way to select in this situation. Its better to go to the channels pallet, and grab any one of the Red Green or Blue channels. Load that channel in as a selection, then make your layer masks or what have you.

                              @Thomas
I don't know if you attended the Basics of Compositing webinar, but one of the last things that I went over was an RGB hack for getting selections. That might be interesting to get masking done quicker (3 objects at a time) if desired. Let me know if you want more info.
