  • Specular Maps

    Hey,

Can anyone tell me how to add specular maps to my materials??

Also, when you add a specular map can the amount of reflection be adjusted?

    Thanks................

    Re: Specular Maps

The way spec maps are typically used in other softwares is not really going to be how their used in V-Ray. Technically, Specular values are going to be controlled through the Highlight glossiness value, but what winds up working much better is using them for standard reflection glossiness. You should be able to just map them there and be fine.

Any control of the amount of reflection has to be done through adjusting the reflection value. In your case you could most likely do the same for ref-glossiness and the reflection value. With mapping reflection values you have two options...the first is just to put the map in the reflection slot and call it a day. This might be alright, but you won't get any variation in the amount of reflection when you look at the object from different angles. The second option, and the better of the two in my opinion, is to use that map WITHIN a fresnel map. The Fresnel Color within the Fresnel map will control the maximum reflection value. This is the best place to stick that map as not only will you see the variations within the map itself, but it will change based on your viewing angle as well.
