  • Rendering in a forest

    Hey once again,

i have a architectural project to do in the middle of the woods, which means that practically every render i make should have loads of big trees in the background, i've searched through the forums and found a few posts on "xfrog" and the results were incredible, but unfortunately i don't have 3ds max or cinema4d to even attempt that method

what's the prefered method of putting trees in renders for you experienced boys?My method takes a lot of time unfortunately.

    cheers in advance

What about bilboard trees? Are you in school? I always hated 3d trees because they just take way too much memory and usually crash the thing anyways. I suppose if it comes down to it you could always use photoshop or GIMP (free) to get those trees in there. Maybe an image of your scene would be helpful.

        Re: Rendering in a forest

To make a bilboard tree you would need #1 an image of a tree #2 an alpha chanel (black and white image depicting negative and positive space). You would then create a new Vray material that has a Diffuse material (picture of tree) and a transparent material (alpha chanel image). you may have to reverse the image of the alpha in vray depending on what you make white or black.

            http://store.got3d.com/3d-textures.html#tree-textures

This website is where I got mine from. Its easy to extract an alpha when the background is all that blue color. They even have free samples. Good luck to you sire. I just graduated from Architecture school so i know how frustrating it can be to learn knew things on the fly like that.

              Re: Rendering in a forest

Thanks a lot mate for the help!

I managed to do it and billboards are definitely good enough and perfect for my needs, having to render loads of trees in the background make billboards the perfect answer! so thanks again.

I also found another post of rptreemaker and i learned that you can make your trees there in sketchup and get the alpha and everything so it all works perfectly!!!
