  • Bitmap file "C:\ProgramData\ASGvis\VRayForSketchUp\Textures\LWPG061D.JPG" failed

I work on the same file on two different computers.

Now I got this problem that Vray cannot find a texture and writes:
Bitmap file "C:\ProgramData\ASGvis\VRayForSketchUp\Textures\LW PG061D.JPG" failed to load: cannot open file

But the texture is in the SU file and "C:\ProgramData\ASGvis\VRayForSketchUp\Texture s\" does not exists on this computer.

Is it somehow possible to 'reset' the textures ? or is there any other way to handle this problem ?

    Thanks

This is one problem that I hate. For future when you do get all the textures fixed, work off of a flash drive or external hard disk. Its honestly the only way to be consistent when working off 2 different computers not connected to a server. You must make sure that the drive letters match on both computers though. If they dont, you have to fix that.

      I'm already doing that.

I work on a USB stick, and the drive has the same drive letter on both computers.

The thing is that this is indicating that it is missing a texture located on the C: drive which is your windows drive most likely. When you do the render does it show any missing textures? I sometimes get weird errors like this but it always renders correctly.

          Hi John

          Yes. Some textures are missing

All you need to do is copy and paste the C:\ProgramData\ASGvis\VRayForSketchUp\Textures folder from your original computer and paste it in your other computer

(remember to turn hidden files on because programdata is a hidden folder, which i suspect is your problem because you said "it doesn't exist", when it does, it's just hidden)

So when your model attempts to load the texture from that location, it will be there.

              Hi mebo

it seems to work. but it would have been nice if vray just exported the material if it could'nt find it.

              Thanks

Currently there are no tools to completely repath textures. However, V-Ray does have a system of search paths, where it will look for assets that it cannot find in their originally specified location. Search Paths are automatically created from any current asset directory, so if you manually go back and repath one texture, then all of the other textures that are in that location will automatically be found.

                  Damien,

I meant to bring this up about a year ago when we were having a similar discussion- the feature you describe only seems to apply to a single folder. As all my textures and bitmaps (like most peoples I guess) are arranged in a library of folders and subfolders I have had to reassign all diffuse, clip and bump maps for all my old VfSU files after doing an OS reinstall. Also, I haven't worked out what causes it or reproduced it, but occasionally VfSU "forgets" map paths, usually just for one material in a file (usually a file I haven't worked on for a while).

It would be FANTASTIC if VfSU could automatically search a defined folder and its subfolders for relevant maps once prompted.

A "copy and paste all relevant maps to one specified folder and automatically update all map paths" function would be even better! ;D

There are several "Pathing" tools that I would like to have for the next version including a way to reset the paths for a given file (good for changes in directory locations), relative pathing, a "home directory" for a given project/file, and a few other things. Any tools that you guys think you'll need in regards to paths, just post them. Most likely this probably will be something of further discussion once we get closer to actually working on them, but the more idea I have of what you guys want/need the better.

                      Hi Dalomar

Could it be so simple, that if Vray can't fund the texture it just exports it from the SU file ? So, that I as a user wont even notice the problem ?

                      Thanks

I imagine the problem with that would be that many VRay users use much larger bitmaps than SU is capable of saving in a skp file. Many of my diffuse and bump maps are well over 4000 px wide/tall whereas SU saves a max of 2048 x 2048 px. Furthermore (AFAIK) SU has no way of saving/exporting VRay's bumps, displacement, clip and environment maps, so the user would almost definitely see many problems íf maps paths were corrupted.

Not quite correct. Su will save the textures in original size, however the OpenGL engine in SU will display max 2048. If you export your textures to disk they will be in the same size as the original.
That is why you should avoid using really high-res textures directly in SU unless you render as you're wasting allot of resources.

I some times make 512-size version of the textures which I use in SU and then make the diffuse layer transparent with a second underneath will the full size. The drawback here is that I have to disable transparency to view the SU model in the viewport. I wish that it was possible to add diffuse layers above the linked SU layer...

Aaaaahhhh, that's why my VfSU files have been getting so big lately- I've been using huge brickwork, tree and wood diffuse bitmaps. Good to know, thanks Thom! ;D

Yea. I looked into it when some of my models took ages to load and save. I had also assumed SU sampled down the textures to 1024 or 2048. Once I reduced them to about 512-1024 the models was much more responsive.
