Re: New user, problem with HDRI

Fully understood. But I really like the way you want the next version to head towards.

Going a bit off-topic here, (sorry), if the spawners are 64bit, but the main computer is grounded to 32bit due to SU, won't that be the weakest link in the chain? If the spawners can address more memory but the host chokes? Or will it be possible to have the host not render at all, sending everything to the spawner? (Maybe set up 64bit spawer on the host, woudl that work?)
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

We'll see The ability to "exclude" the host (or rather just manage the render not contribute to it) has been requested a number of times. Depending on how we structure things there may be other options as well.

Man I completely forgot about sketchups 32bit limitations.. I've been using 64bit programs for so long for some reason I thought Vray was able to use all 12 gigs. Probably explains why I got the crash then as it was quite a complex scene.

I must be missing something really obvious here with regards to the 'smoothing' issue. I cant seem to solve it though - I brought in some random Google Warehouse objects and rendered them... some of them turned out 'smooth' even though they had hundreds of hidden faces whereas some objects had that 'faceted' look which would ruin a render. I just dunno how Vray determines which objects to render smoothly and which not. Any ideas? My 30 day trial is being cut short because according to an email I received today you have $100 off until tomorrow!

If you have defined an Edge in SU as smooth & soft, then you'll get a smoothed surface when you render. Note that while softed and smoothed edges are also 'hidden' they are not the same as hidden edges.
Also, if any group/component containing the edges has a material applied to it, it won't render smooth.

Do you have a sample model we can look at?

Well Im guessing selecting all geometry and applying maximum smoothing settings should get the job done... but it doesnt seem to work.
Here are the two shots for comparison, I cant supply the full screenshot due to client nondisclosure agreements unfortunately.

              Competitors render package:

There are a few other bits of geometry with similar effects within the model I also cannot resolve.

Re: New user, problem with HDRI

and you're 100% sure that none of the parent groups/components has a material applied to it?

Yep, I even redid the geometry in a new file to make sure nothing was applied. Is there a ruby to completely remove all materials from a scene?

Yes, you can get it here: http://forums.sketchucation.com/view...17587&p=140672 (you might have to register to download it. But that forum has lots of ruby gems, so I'd recommend everyone to sign up there.)

And here's one to remove Group/Components material, with option to transfer the material to the geometry inside. http://forum.asgvis.com/index.php?topic=5386.0

Re: New user, problem with HDRI

ThomThom, thanks for your help. I had already tried the remove CG ruby from here without success. However I seem to have resolved the problem now by playing around with the soften edges slider. It seems that too little and even though the geometry goes onto the 'hidden geometry' state as smoothed, it still renders incorrectly. If you notch it up around 60-80 degrees it seems to render fine but if you put it higher still it introduces even more weird artifacts.
Something for me to be aware of in the future. Anyway I have got the script off sketchucation (already a member) it will come in handy no doubt, thanks.
