Re: background image
When you save in .png format the alpha channel is merged into the image, so everything that's background becomes transparent. The Alpha image is for use in post processing.
If you go to Options->VFB Channels and remove the Alpha channel you can save in .png format without the background turning transparent. The Alpha image is also not created. Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

Re: background image
As the other guy said, its used for post processing such as photoshop when you want to add your own background and such. Its very helpful so that you dont have to spend alot of time cropping out a background. You can do what thomthom said about getting rid of the alpha or you could simply save the image file as a file type that does not support alphas such as jpg or bmp. If I remember right there is a way to get that background back once the image has already been saved but I dont remember how. Its a photoshop thing. If you dont have photoshop check out GIMP. Its free and very powerful.John Harvey
Intern Architect
Digital Design and Fabrication
http://jrharveyarchportfolio.blogspot.com/
