  • Out of curiosity...

...what do you do when your system (and renderfarm) is rendering? Twiddle thumbs?

Some times I wish I had some wet paint I could watch dry so there'd be some action...
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

I keep modelling or editing textures- Thank God for "low thread priority"!

That what I try to do, but when I'm rendering large model, I have to keep SU open with the large model while rendering. And I've experienced that I've over stressed the system and caused crashes.

I depends what the kind of render is. The last animation that I was rendering, I practically wasn't sitting in front of my computer for that week when the animation was cranking. For stills and things (where I only care about the end result, not how it gets there) I try to start it before lunch or a meeting, writing long email/forum responses, or before I go to bed.

Really? I realise my reply may have sounded facetious/boastful, but I've actually never experienced a system crash due to VRay rendering so I always work on other stuff while rendering. I guess you must be working on much larger models than I do. I often have one instance of SU open with VRay rendering while I'm modelling in another SU model, or work on a texture in PS. In fact the only thing that really kills my very modest system (1.83Ghz Centrino Duo, 1.5Gb RAM) is editing v. large images and HDRIs in PS. Restart, restart, restart. >

            Re: Out of curiosity...

I seem more like Sketchup is claiming too much OpenGL resources. Photoshop CS4's hardware acceleration seem to cut off much quicker.

Could be a driver issue I've had though. A couple of months ago when I updated the drivers I couldn't have two SU's open. It'd turn blank. So I reverted back to an older driver. Just recently updated again after the drivers seemed to be corrupted after I installed/uninstalled Revit/AutoCAD, and everything seems to be working.

Then again, there are times when I don't have anything to do until the first render comes out. I usually end up helping people out with computer problems... :P

If Vray would support a ring tone after a rendring is finished, than I could do other things than waiting for a-few-minutes renderings. But no interest at chaosgroup for the feature, since at 3dsmax it seems to be possible:

Yes, This'd be a nice feature.
But I think it could be possible for VfSU in it's current state if you're willing to hack the ruby files that comes with it. I've already done some changes so lights are created in the active group/component instead of the model root.

I managed to make it make a sound when the Render is complete is you have Batch Render enabled, meaning the SU UI id frozen until the render is completed. But so far I can't work out how to do it if it isn't.

The problem is, that I don't want to lock Rhino per "batch render" option (because I like to work on Rhino during rendering often too) and so my first solution was not good for the dailyworkflow. And a solution without "batch render" seems to be not possible.

                        thomthom,
Any chance of being able to get directions on how to do this? I think that is a feature that everyone would like to have.

                        Thanks.

Not sure if ASGVis would be too happy about this kind of DIY work made public...

Okay, that makes more sense...I'll see a "Render finished" event is something that can be quickly added.

So you're mucking around in Ruby again I'd certainly like to know what you're cooking up, so if you feel like sending me an email... BTW Micha doesn't have that option since VfR is a compiled plugin.
