  • Vismat not showing in SU

Ok this is driving me NUTZ

    Hi all
Im new to V-ray so please bear with me if this is a dumb question.

I download the wood_frame vismat from the download section. I unzipped the file , which gave me
    -wood frame.vismat
    -Preview.png
    -woodwork.jpg
So I imported the vismat file into sketchup through the V-Ray Material Editor
I previewed it, which shows a wood material. (In V-RayMaterial Editor)
I then applied it to a few selected faces.
In Sketchup the faces that I applied the material to are now coloured grey. (Not the wood material that I imported)
I then render the model and the imported vismat shows up but at the wrong scale.
I select the material in SU and go to edit the material eg re size, but it doesn't allow me, the scaling option is greyed out.

    What am I doing wrong

If I add a material to V-Ray Material editor and import a bitmap then apply this to the model I don't have the same problem. Only when I import a vismat.

Hope Ive explained myself well. English is my first language but sometimes feels like its my third or fourth.

    I'm using SU7pro and V-Ray 01.05.30

Also I'm trying to download Brushed Stainless Steel vismat off the site but am unable to. All others download fine. I need it for a job I'm working on.

    Any help would be appreciated.

If you PM me with your email addy I can send you the brushed steel vismat if its an urgent project.
Im not sure about the timber texture problem tho, I tend to create my own textures.

When you import vismats you need to relink the bitmaps that fololow it. I'm guessing that the vismat expects tot find the bitmaps in a different location.
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

Yep this is true, you can actually see the paths that Vray is looking at for your files when you render in the text window.

hm... but he said that the preview was working...
and looking at the screenshot it seems odd.

I do wonder if the diffuse material isn't a bitmap, but maybe a blend map.

Holmes, when you click the M in the diffuse layer - what map type does it say it is?

(This is one of the reason why I don't really use third party vizmats. They often cause more work than they're worth. They might make assumption of a workflow that's completely different from your own.)

i agree with thomthom, i just tested out wood_01.vismat from the vismat material collection...

@ holmes1977 after importing and applying the vismat wood_01.vismat following the same steps that you did i also got the same result.. my object is also grayed-out.. so what i did is go to the imported vismat, then diffuse layers, then diffuse, click the capital M, then browse for the map wood-01.jpg(in my case), then press open... after i press open my SU scene automatically show the wood texture.. now i can resize and rotate the texture.. another thing, check also if the uv repeat is set to 1 and rotation 0, so that vray will use the mapping size and rotation that you will adjust using SU's texturing.. also if the texture doesn't appear after clicking open, try to reapply the vismats to your objects..

I'm also a newbie in Vray for SU and i havent posted any output that i made 'cause i haven't finish anything yet for the main reason that my job doesn't need rendering.. i just want to learn when i have free time... I hope i was able to help you.... ;D

I think this can be solved by applying the bitmap in SU.
Check the "Use texture image" in su's material window, select the image and finally set the scale.

Re: Vismat not showing in SU

Thanks all for your reply. Been very helpful

                @ Thom thom and gerbaux
With your help I figured it out. If I press the M in the diffuse tab and go into where you load the maps. I found that a bitmap was loaded. In the preview it was just black. So I pressed preview where the material (loaded bitmap) showed. Went back into SU where it also showed on the selected faces. I tried this with a couple of other vismats that I had downloaded. They all worked the same. So they were loaded but for some reason just needed to be previewed.

                @ edonk
I PMed you with my email. That would be so helpful if you could send that material to me.

                Thanks again

                One more question.
If I have a material, say white brick and I want to darken it to a grey colour, what do I do? I thought you would be able to do this in the SU material editor. This changes the colour of the material in SU but when I render the model the material renders at its standard colour

I recommend you modify the texture in Photoshop. When you use the SU material window to adjust the colour V+Ray creates a Blend map which doesn't really look right. It doesn't produce the same result you see in SU.
