    Re: Black spots on Interior

High HSph. Subdivs are often the IM culprit for long render times. Low min and max rates can speed up the render process by reducing the number of IM passes, but they have negligable speed effect on the final pass so it'll still take as long as it takes. This does however have a very considerable effect on the quality of the the final pass. Like it says in the manual, min -3 max 0 is the optimum setting to use: lower settings degrade quality (but are good for test renders) and higher cause unecessarily long render times due to excessive passes.

HSph. Subdivs on the other hand affect both IM passes and the final pass so have a considerable effect on the overall render time. For this reason I never go above 200 HSph. Subdivs and only then for models with extremely tricky textures like dark brick with white grout which tend to moire badly. As a general rule, HSph. Subdivs of 25 are fine for many arch renders, 50 is better and 100 is usually the most you'll need- see attachments and render speeds below. As usual though, there are loads of other factors involved like HDRI/LDRI GI map quality, textures, etc all of which make parameters more or less relevant depending on the model.

Ok, so far we can say:

        min:+3 max:0
        hsph: 50

with the average settings are giving a decent Arch rendering.

that's really sounds more like a "cooking recipe"
        let's bake it

and that's some fast render. can we have the .visopt of that?

Is that a typo? +3, 0 sounds wierd. I can understand -3, 0 which does give good quality renders.

On the subject of quality v. time and my setting of -4,-2 here is an example rendered at that setting.

Ooops that was typo, my laptop keyboard is English and my OS language is Swedish so the - key types as + if I forget to temporarily switch OS language! Obviously using +3 min rate would result in almost infinite render times. :-[

Really nice render, no signs of light leaks there! Is it lit with 2 omnis?

(typo - I wonder if that is is why Mies said "less is more"! - or as Frasier said if 'less is more' then think how much more would be!)

              Yep - 2 omnis.

'Blotches' seem to be a perenial issue (without a difinative answer). It is worth reading this thread also from last year

                Re: Black spots on Interior

i just use -4,-2 my highest is -3,-1 i never go higher thant that. as for hsph subd, i think 150 is too much.. i will only use 200hsph if im lighting only with emiisive as my only lighting source...

based on my experience you dont really need it that high. my hsph subd for most of my render is 80...

i guess my render slows down more with materials (because i ussually put high subdivision with my material particularly blurry mrefelctions) rather than the rendering engine that i use.

i often have those blotchiness, and damien often told me about the distance of samples beiong calculated when light is somewhat obscured and not lighting the area well. my solution by not having to sort with high hsph nor min and max is by providing light behind the camera with low multiplier. on the other hand if you dont really like that you will end up really with having higher hsph subd and high min and max... the only thing is renderign time will be longer...
