  • unwanted effect

I have this test of a nightscene rendered and am experiencing some unwanted visible layers of the shadows, the layers are aligned sort of like a cut open onion (see image). This becomes especialy visible with vigneting clicked on under physical camera.

Im using iradiance map as primary and light cache as secondary bounce, both with relativly high settings.
Antialiasing with catmull rom, fixed, with pretty high settings.

Turn off the vignetting, I think it'll help.

      Re: unwanted effect

It could simply be the limitation of the image format you're saving or of computer displays. Try saving as .hdr and then converting to 8bit in Photoshop or Photomatix and see if the banding is still evident. It can be very difficult to eliminate in extremely dark images, as the human eye can distinguish between very slight changes in brightness at very low levels much better than it can at high levels, which is why you never see banding in very bright images, even though it is technically there. It's the same reason you see banding in night scenes in DVD films.

Yea, as Jackson says - might help to save in a high colour depth and use Photoshop to reduce the colours - think it's able to reduce the colours using dithering which should help.
