  • Confused Newbie, please set me straight!

    Hi guys, i recently downloaded a demo of the Vray for sketchup software. I tried it out a while back and didn't really have time to play around with it.

    Right now our workflow says i have time to play around with it!

    So. I've been trying it out on a sketchup model i did of our office a while back. I plugged some of the herman miller furniture we have into the model (they are high poly counts), and gave it a go.

    I tweaked the glass (Clear and sandblasted) to achieve better looks using the Vray materials. So far im very impressed! However im having a very strange issue.

    I first tried rendering it using the default settings, but i set the second pass to light-cache. Frankly, i am in the dark here with most of these settings. But i thought id give it a go. It took forever and a heartbeat to render. I let it go for about 3 hours before i went home for the evening. Not honestly sure how long it took, but it took a long time. I also ended ip with a bizzare lighting effect on the walls. it's spotty.

    I used the stickied threads ruby script to fix my materials this morning. and i started a new render. I figured it would go quicker and my lighting issue (since im using true defaults now) would go away. Well im about 6 hours into the render and don't want to give up on it, but its clearly doing the same thing.

    Here is an image of the first rendering pass with the odd lighting condition on the walls: note i had turned off the furniture to speed it up. Don't think it helped though.



    Here is an in-progress rendering, and based on how it looks, i can tell it will do the same thing again.

    So my questions are:

    1. What the heck am i doing wrong? It's very difficult for me to make a change, then wait hours on hours to see what im doing and if it helped or not.
    2. What are some good settings to use that will speed up a render for 'testing' purposes?
    3. More to follow im sure!

    making a few changes so i canceled it

    Number of raycasts: 1513172455

    im suspecting the pattern might be a hold over of translucent glass. setting up a render before i leave for the night to see what the result might be.

    is this a lot of raycasts?

      i turned down my lights. i had them at 350watts. figured that was way too much. toned them down, thinking it was causing the splotching.

      well...

      the splotching is still visible on the walls.

      i'm going to remove the image im using from the paint sample. maybe that's whats causing it.

        Blue,

        What are your render settings? Post a screen shot. This will determine what your rendering will come come out like. Without these settings, we are really taking astab in the dark.

          well.

          here is a link to a JPG of my settings.
          its large, and will clutter this up morose than it already is.

          however, i believe i have sorted out the problem.

          I did numerous tests using the light inside of a block, outside of a block, near to objects, far etc.

          what i've concluded is that when the light is inside the block, it acts differently than when it is outside. I am unsure why, but i have this image that show it:



          either way it seems to have solved the problem... The render times are drastically lower too (Note, i already used the stickied trick for applying materials to faces rather than blocks)

          Here is another attempt. I have some work to do on the lighting, but its much smoother now.
