  • Displacement Problem

I never had this problem before. It looks like only half of the carpet gets a proper displacement.
    Here's some info:
    - Texture projected on all faces and edges
    - The normals are correct
    - Displacement hight 2px, subdivs 1024 (also tried 512)
    - IR max -1, min -3, Hsbdivs 70, samples 50
    - Adaptive amount 0.85
    - Noise threshold 0.005
    - sub-pixel checked

    I can't figure out what causing it ?! ???

Turn off or reduce smoothing on the rug group- it sometimes screws up how VfSU reads UV info especially on very thin objects like rugs.

I disabled the smoothing edges (0.00 degrees), and there's no change

Could it just be the angel you're viewing it from? What happends if you render from a different angle?
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

By any chance, you have a light above? Sometimes, I noticed that displacement or bump look different, just by changing the light position.

hey man, where you got the model of the carpet? I mean, the geometry, is very good, could you please Share or at least say where I could get it?.
                Thank you.

                  Re: Displacement Problem

This carpet is actually a pillow scaled down (flatten). Check out this tutorial http://forum.asgvis.com/index.php?topic=5225.0

many thanks man!, I thought for a moment that could be a pillow, and even try a couple of models of pillows, but not the same model as the tutorial, thanks for the help and the link!

I think you have different problem with the displacement: not enough subdivisions

                          Re: Displacement Problem

Hey 40th, I have the same problem as you. Below is one of my test scenes:

It's like the farther the displaced grass is from the camera, the more those hidden/softened edges reveal themselves.

Just a crazy thought: Have you tried creating two flattened pillows (one with displacement, the other with bump) occupying the same space, but have the pillow with the bump map moved up just a hair (like 0.02cm)? The smoothness of the bumped pillow's surface should mask the hard edges of the displaced pillow, but still be low enough for the blades of grass to poke through.

(I'd try this myself, but I never get any free time in the office to mess around with V-Ray and try new things.)
                          I am currently using V-Ray 1.49.01.

Did you try to scale the pillow again ?

                              Re: Displacement Problem

                              Hi Marcus,
The issue you're having is due to the triangles created to subdivide that curved grass path.
If you have a "Subdivide and smooth plugin" you can do a "subdivide" and see how the grass face is subdivided to triangles, its the same Vray does.

I wish I could explain it better in words, but hope you understand... If not I'll try to explain it better.
