  • Translucent materials

    Hey guys,

I was wondering if any of you guys uses "translucenty" on materials like grass and leaves.
If I'm correctly translucenty is the same as subsurface scattering right?

I would like to make my trees more realistic and leaves are translucent right?
I never tried translucent materials before so if anyone could help me making an photorealistic material for leaves I would be happy.

What I do now to make a leave in vfsu is:
diffuse map with a transparanty map, a bit mapmap and a reflectionmap with highlight and reflectionglossiness set to 0.75

    Cheers remon_v

    Re: Translucent materials

Well in order to be able to see refraction you need thick leafs (not a single face).
I found a nice tutorial which demonstrates refraction, and can help to get the effect you wish. It's for VfMax but it's the same principle.

That's a great demo image 40th- explains translucency settings at a glance.

Peter Guthrie just posted an excellent tutorial on his blog on exactly this subject- using VRay2sidedMtl for a quick translucent effect on single-faced tree leaves. Check out his work while you're there, he uses Rhino, 3DMax and V-Ray and he's undoubtedly a master of visualisation.

Vray2sided looks great! It's also has shorter render times which is a big pro.

There's another method for this, a bit less impressive. I did a tutorial on it about a year ago http://forum.asgvis.com/index.php?topic=5132.0

Yes, VRay2Sided is really nice - and quick. Always try this first for thin materials. I just recently used it in an interior model for curtains.
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.
