  • HELP: Curved Glass

Hello, I'm trying to study the reflection on a project that I'm working on, the problem is that SU or Vray doesn't recognize a curve into a single curve, instead is a group of faces (in this case I'm using 100).
    I'm using nomeradona_exterior.visopt and as materials, clear_glass & glossy_plastic.

Is there anyway to solve this? Here is a preview, and as you can see the reflections right now doesn't work.

Also, is there any option to make the glass at a % of translucent, I mean in the final image (.png) so I can just put a background in PS and I'll be able to see it.

    Thank you.

You can set the alpha contribution of the material so you can use that as a layer mask in Photoshop afterwards.
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

      Right.

Here is another sample of the bad curved glass :'(

Did you applied Soften/smooth edges su's tool, and if so to what Degree?
Also can you post a screen shot of the scene with the hidden geometry ON (visible)?

Yes I did, at least in some. But there is no difference with or without Soften Edges. And the ones that I did was at max with the 2 boxes checked.

texture mapping inside SU i think. i remember one of ande's tutorial on trees, he manually applied the texture on the curved wall surface using dropper and paint bucket with geometry on. i think that would solve your problem.

What VfSU version do you use? The previous versions has problems where applying materials to the outside of groups/components would render smooth surfaces faceted.

@sir thom, does this also occurs in SU 7.1? I encountered problem importing a file on SU 7 to SU 7.1, all the textures are re-mapped. so rendering curved surfaces are faceted. is this because of SU?

                  Re: HELP: Curved Glass

No - the version of SU does not matter, but the version of V-Ray for SketchUp (VfSU) matters.

                    okay.. thanks sir thom.
the new version handles materials differently?

                      Re: HELP: Curved Glass

The older versions did not handle materials applied to groups/components properly.

                        Re: HELP: Curved Glass

Have you tried exploding the curved wall then regrouping it?

I've had that same issue with spheres. Sometimes they would come out faceted, but after exploding and regrouping them, they'd render smoothly.

Also, when you created that curved wall, did you have to manually hide any unwanted lines on the curve? I've noticed that V-Ray doesn't always recognize that as a smooth surface.
                        I am currently using V-Ray 1.49.01.
