  • ..What the hell! HELP!

ok. i have been working on this model for a few hours and ripping out some test renders with VRAY.

For some unknown reason it began ignoring applied materials and rendering like this ... (IMG 1-Sketch Up IMG 2- Vray Output)

Notice the black triangles.. they are ment to be timber, and in other locations the material applied doesn't render, it just renders a different material all together. I have tried re applying materials, removing materials, re modeling, Removing GC materials, changing shadow settings/camera settings... everything but it just keeps happening... i have also tried rendering on another machine and you guessed it...Still happening

if anyone can shed some light as to why this is happening PLEASE help....

It looks like you have a few faces stuck on one another. Sometimes, when modelling, when you draw a new line, it may draw in a new face also. It's hard to tell without the actual model, but from what I can see, that's what it looks like.

Also, make sure your faces are facing the correct way. Problems can occur in Vray if you don't have the front faces facing outwards.

I'll have to second Stevebo on that.

Try these to see if they help:

      1. View your SketchUp model in Monochrome mode. (It's in the group of buttons with the cubes. If you don't have this toolbar open, go to View --> Toolbars --> Face Style and select the Monochrome button.)

Once in Monochrome mode, you can see which surfaces have the back side (blue) facing you and which have the front side (white) facing you. V-Ray doesn't read materials properly that are applied to the blue (or back) side of a surface, so you want to make sure all the front (white) sides are facing you. For any blue surfaces you see, right-click it and choose "Reverse Faces."

Once you're done reversing all the necessary faces, go back to your regular view model and you may need to re-apply some materials on a few of the faces.

      2. Make sure there aren't any overlapping surfaces in an enclosed shape. You know, usually in SketchUp, when you draw an enclosed shape, that shape fills up with a surface. Sometimes, though, when you draw an enclosed shape, that shape fills up with 2 surfaces overlapping each other. It's an annoying little glitch that SketchUp does every now and then.

Try selecting one of the surfaces in your model that rendered funny (like the wood wall with white windows) and hit Delete. If the surface still remains, that means there must have been 2 surfaces occupying that same space (and you just deleted one). Try doing that with all the surfaces that rendered funny. Just click Undo if you delete a surface by accident.

      Good luck!
      I am currently using V-Ray 1.49.01.

I had already checked these issues... unfortunately not the problem. i have a feeling the actual file has almost corrupted itself.

thanks for the response... but unfortunately this wasn't the issue either, all materials were applied to the correct face and there were no overlapping.

this is driving me insane! i ended up re-modeling the entire model from scratch, in a new file and ... viola no issues..but it would still be good to get to the bottom of this... lol

            Re: ..What the hell! HELP!

seems to me a modelling problem rather than render problem. anyway i will give the benefit of the doubt since your claim was not really a modelling problem. my advise is try to remove those faces/model again/go back and forth with monochrome view (but you have done this. perhaps apply the same texture with different name. see what will happen. if not share your model and we will help to look at your problem.

its defiantly not a modeling issue, monochrome shows all white faces to the exterior and from selecting/deleting faces i found only one face & i would love to share my model, however, working in a large architectural office, this is forbidden, especially considering the design circumstances behind the development of the rest of the model not shown in the images.

BUT i found, after exploding all of the components and re applying the materials, the re-component'ing and duplicating i didn't have the issue.

It still would be great to get to the bottom of why this happed in the first place as it has wasted a day and a half...thanks for all of the responses

Can you provide a sample of the model illustrating this?
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

i always encounter things like this but its modelling mistake. but since this is a rare encounter, indeed the model will help us see whats the problem. can you share the model or just perhaps the walls removeing other parts if you dont want to share all.

                    Re: ..What the hell! HELP!

Hi guys... just to follow up.
I think i have discovered why the materials were rendering as shown.

What had happed was: The material applied in sketch-up (timber) was applied to the face SU via the paint bucket tool, however the face also had a material applied manually in Vray (right click, apply material), Therefore Vray was attempting to render glass sand timber over the top of each other resulting in the above.

This was confusing as there was only one face with 2 materials added even more confusing is how this happened initially, I always use SU paint bucket and manipulate using Vray, i never apply materials manually...The annoying thing is, now whenever i want to change that material i have to use Vray, as the 'apply no material' using doesn't work and i cant seem to fine 'clear material'. But not to worry, problem solved.

Thanks for all of your suggestions..

                      Re: ..What the hell! HELP!

Are you using the old original VfSU? If so then yea - there was no way to clear the V-Ray material.

The later versions automatically linked SU materials and VfSU materials.
