  • Stone wall difficulty

    Hello all,

I'm trying to render a stone wall. It's one of those cases where the stone wall existing in the site is to be left. There's a couple of walls in the design that will look similar, but, before i get into any sort of details like that, I need a good stone wall first.

Here's an image of what's onsite:

I've tried using the materials for download here, but i'm having no luck whatsoever with those. they don't even seem to render for me. but anyway, is there anyone who can give me a few tips for getting a really good stone wall, with that sort of vernacular look to it?

    Hi
I just save the image that you posted in this thread and made a material from it. On the .rar file you are going to find two material one for the old version of V-Ray and other for the new version. I hope work for you

Note that if you try to displace geometry in VfSU, the displaced material must be isolated into a group or component. No other materials should be connected to your displaced geometry.
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

fpedrogo that worked excellently!!! I think i must be adding materials to vray wrong, cos whenever i do import material and select the vismat file, the texture just comes up grey, and then i've to edit it through the material editor in sketchup.

Nevertheless, once i did that, and got the scale right, it came out pretty well. I'm sure i'll have to tweak all the materials towards the end; i'm still modeling a lot of it, but so far, the wall looks pretty spot on!

How did you create the texture by the way? I never realised I could create textures from photos. I always thought that the perspective of photos made it nearly impossible to do.

          Hi
I'm glad this work for you. We have an issue where you have to relink the textures in order to see the material in the viewport. We are going to fix that.
In order to create the material I use this program.

          http://www.pixplant.com/

This program allows you to create the bump mapping, the diffuse mapping and even the specular mapping.

            Re: Stone wall difficulty

Brilliant!! there's a few walls, all with slightly different shades, due to when they were built. Never realised how easy it was to create textures from photos. This definitely improves the overall quality of my renders. Next on the improving to-do list is lighting, and details.

cheers again for the help. i'll try to post up some examples as soon as they're nearly done.

              Hi Neil
I'm glad you like the tool. I made a simple test using the stone material.

The displacement on that test shot is awesome. Did you do anything out of the ordinary to the settings for that, or is that pretty much the default visopt?

In the new build you can control the displacement setting by material and I prefer use those setting. So I went to the stone material and disable the "Use Global" option, and I changed the "edge length" to 2. That it's.
                    Remember this:

                      Re: Stone wall difficulty

yeah i'm still getting used to the new build. That's much handier that you can set the displacement parameters by each material.

Still modeling away. I've spent all day at it, so i've about 70% of the modeling done. All i have now is the details. I always get caught out here as to what i should put in as models, and what should go in as masks. Hopefuly i'll get some progress renders up tomorrow afternoon. I've made a few textures in PS today for things like grass and carpet.

What am i doing wrong..i tried a sample render but get all jaggered edges..very sharp looking stones...what should i do to rectify this look to make the masonry look a bit more smoother

u can see the trial image here

also @ fpedrogo: sir ur upload has 4 images..diffuse, disp, normal and specular...i figured out 3 of them as where to link the images to get the material...but i couldnt understand where to link the specular one as the reflection layer has a fresnel texture.

did you change the edge length to 2 in the displacement settings for that material?

If you don't want that kind of sharp appearance you can open the displacement map texture in photoshop and apply a gaussian blur effect to blurry the image a little bit.

To understand better the specular mapping, please look at this thread.
