  • Vray Rhino vs Vray SketchUp

Are these products about the same in terms of quality, usefulness, etc.? Or is one more advanced than the other? I really wish Vray was a studio program with plugins for different programs like Maxwell so this wasn't an issue.

The advantage of V-Ray is that is not that, a studio render, is a integrated UI in your favorite 3d software.

but maxwell is harder... i used to use it with the sketchup plugin, and it is so different... i definetly believe that for what i do (as an architect) vray works better...
don't know about rhino, but if you ask me, i totally recomend sketchup... and it's vray plugin of course

For Rhino is the same same thing, can you imagine after having made a lots of changes in material an suddenly you have to edit par of the geometry? you wanna go back to the 3d modeler and edit and then import again and redo the tweaking? naaaaaa
Is better to have all in one place!

Thanks for all of these replies. I hadn't thought about the inconvenience of making changes once the model has left the modeling application.

I'm still curious about the relative strengths and weaknesses of the Rhino Vray vs the SketchUp Vray. I model in modo and export as OBJ but SketchUp chokes on OBJ files of any complexity.

Re: Vray Rhino vs Vray SketchUp

V-Ray for SketchUp is the same as V-Ray for Rhino, we use the same plugin core. (currently the version of V-Ray for SketchUp is a bit ahead of V-Ray for Rhino, but that will change soon). If you compared the 1.05.30 release of V-Ray for SketchUp versus the 1.05.29 ( I think that was the version number) of V-Ray for Rhino, you should have pretty much the same exact features in both. There are some minor differences, but as far as performance and capabilities go, they should be almost identical. They both use the same code base and version of V-Ray. The REAL difference is between SketchUp and Rhino. Rhino is an advanced 3D modeling application, SketchUp is a lightweight 3D modeling application. Rhino can handle larger scenes and more detailed geometry than SketchUp, so it all depends on what you're going to be using the app for, how comfortable you are with the interfaces of each app, and how big your wallet is.
