  • clay effect - no contrast!

    Hi everybody,

I am trying to achieve this effect (done with cinema 4D):

I am testing with this model,

only using GI + AO, material color 248 248 248

and I am getting this result.

I am not happy of the result because there is not enough contrast.

    I need some help!

    thank you very much,

    Serra

A way to do it is to fkae it like they do in 3ds max. there they use a vray light material with a vray dirt in the colour box.

So to do it in skpvray i just delete the diffuse layer, and add a emissive layer, then add a vray dirt material to the colour of the emissive layer, with the black black, and the white white in the dirt parameters, and you get the above results.

please see the attached images for a better explaination.

Sorry for they bad wording. hope this helps

          sorry 1 more thing,

Turn off the environment and background in the environment layer in the options palette, and also turn off the indirect illumination as well. this will make your render way quicker, as it wont have to prepass. you can also keep the indirect illum on if you want it. it doesnt relly make too much difference apart from render time

Re: clay effect - no contrast!

Thank you grapheler, it is an interesting solution...

with your method do you think is possible to obtain less nois-effect in the darker part?

in your image the noise makes litte bit a low-res feeling..

              serra,

              you mean like this?

what I did was to turn on the Ambient Occlusion under Indirect Illumination.
I'm using IR map and Light Cache

                Artu,
we have the same settings... how is it possible??!

                how is your material?

                in Ambient Occlusion I have:
                radius 50
                subd: 20
                amount: 0,2

                thx!

Re: clay effect - no contrast!

For some reason, this seems to work better for me when I use the override materials box checked with a white or near white material.

Also, I think the radius is tied to model scale (1 inch)... so measure something in your scene and adjust it higher or lower. Don't use physical camera because it sucks with just white GI.

Re: clay effect - no contrast!

I left my test settings at the office.
hmmm. as far as I can remember my settings were as follows:
                    -using default camera
-no vray sun and sky on both GI and Background (just plain white) but the multiplier for the GI is 2(if I'm not mistaken)
-for indirect illumination, A.O. is turned on with the settings: radius 20 subdivs44 and amount .6 (again this is all I can remember during my test so I'm not sure if this were the settings on the final output)
-Irradiance map has -3,-1 with HSph subdivs of 60 and samples at 25( I think I should increase this a bit but not too much because it will smoothen out the contact surfaces between an object thus no less contact shadow)
                    -for light cache its 2000
                    everything is by default.

what I did was rendering by region so the it would render only a spot where I wanted to.

Re: clay effect - no contrast!

another work around would be an A.O. on with a vray toon material applied to those boxes.
but tweaked the vray toon material so as not to darken the lines outlining those boxes.

                      cheers

                        No physical camera
All white-- override material (can't use vray dirt though ), white GI, white background

                        AO settings?
This scene was 150' by 150' because I'm lazy.

                        Radius 320
                        Subdivisions 20
                        Amount 1.4

                        Standard render settings

                            Great!
just improve the contrast on your next render.
