  • Texture placement workaround for SketchUp

If you're having a problem placing the texture for dispalacement or bump properly, it's probably because you don't have a diffuse texture set. SketchUp's UV system expects a texture to be set that is visible in the viewport. If no texture is visible in the viewport, the model will have no UV information. Without UV information, textures can't be placed very easily. The only way to modify the size of the texture in this case, would be to change the repeat value of the texture being used. This can be rather frustrating.

The other way to go about resolving this issue, is to add a new diffuse layer to the material (make sure it's the top most Diffuse layer in the material, since that's the one we use for viewport representation). Set a TexBitmap for the Diffuse Color, you can use any texture you want, it really doesn't matter. Now here' the important part, set a TexAColor texture for the Diffuse layer's Transparency. Set the TexAColor to be White. Since we don't use TexAColor textures in the SketchUp viewport, it won't effect the visibility of the geometry in the scene, however it will effect the visibility of that Diffuse layer in your render (in other words, this layer ends up only being visible in the viewport). Since the Diffuse texture will be visible in the viewport, SketchUp will generate UV information, and you will be able to adjust the placement of the texture using SketchUp's UV placement tools (movement and scale and rotation work, skewing does not).

nice tip, thanks. I would usually set the first diffuse to total transparency. It worked, but I couldnt see the geometry at the viewport.

I was also doing the same thing like Aces high before, thanks to the tip of Acolor, I am using all these thing with displacement, bump, dirt etc. I hope in the future there would be a better workaround, nevetheless, i will add this in my tutorial now and show step by step screen grabs. thanks for the tip dkendig
