  • HDRI Image Scale

Can't believe I don't know this but can someone please help me 'scale' an HDR image I am using as a background. I have the image inserted as the map for GI and BG. All is good except the problem is that the image is way too large (i.e. I am only seeing part of it) and it is way blurred.

I don't want to crop the image, just make it smaller.

    Hope you can help.

    Cheers....Scotty

well i'm not an expert, but acording to me... it is not possible to scale an hdri image.. the only thing we can do is change the number of horizontal or vertical repetitions... :-\

You are right, there no way to adjust the scale. The only thing that you can do is use the repeat option, but you could see the repeat pattern on the reflection.

Did you try to map it to sperhically under environmental mapping?

          Re: HDRI Image Scale

Thanks for the quick replies. Much appreciated!

I have it set to spherical but that still has the problem of scale. It is a landscape scene so the repeat option isn't great.

Must admit I am still a little confused. I would have though a 'standard' size hdr image would automatically 'fit'. Every one of my hdr images has the same result. Could there be something I can do with the positioning of the model within SU entity?

Thanks again for the great support.

            Re: HDRI Image Scale

well... one very usefull thing that i learned here is that an hdri looks the same wheter your close or far from your model... i actually get really far from my models (inside sketchup) so that my renders can be much faster and i can be able to see the hdri... then i rotate them, and render again, till i get the right angle...
also you can save your render as a png a then you can use any other background image... so there shouldn't be a problem with the scale... i use hdri mostly to get certain moods... or illumination
            hope this helps

You blame VfSU for your HDRI's not fitting?

You are using an HDRI that doesn't cover the environment 360 degrees? That will cause problems not matter what. It's not enough to have an HDRI image, it must be made to be used as a 360 degree environment image in order to be useful at all.

                      ThomThom,

many thanks. I had missed that point completely. When following the few tutorials there are on this subject, I didn't see any reference to having the images made to be used as a 360 degree environment image.

I guess you know my next question! How do I make images suitable for this purpose?

Many thanks again for taking the time to help out!

                      Cheers....Scotty

                        Re: HDRI Image Scale

you dont have to make them man.
                        here's a link
you just have to clic on the previews to download them
                        you will download a .rar
inside, you'll find the preview image in jpeg.
                        hdri's have another format
inside the rar you'll also find a couple of hdri's. one small for the illumination (gi)
and a big one for the background.
                        please don't underestimate sketchup
