  • Rendering Times

ok, I'm a novice (though I'd done a lot of modeling about 5 years ago in ACAD and Accurender) And my pc here is a steaming pile so I'm shopping for a new one today. But as a new VRAY user, I'm trying to figure out how much time is reasonable to plan for in rendering times in VRAY for SU. (I know, its like how much is a red car?....) But I'm an architect that does lots of mixed use buildings, exteriors and interiors. Plus or minus 50,000 SF. I know there are numerous variables and to the untrained eye many of them seem to have equal weight so its a daunting task to start reading/experimenting, plus I realize what a dramatic effect the settings have on time and output.

Anyway, the simpler question is 'what is a reasonable expectation for the rendering process?' could be as simple as 2 mins to check materials/lighting., however many times...and whatever....2, 3, 10? hours for the final. My attempt last night ran for 7 hours before thing caught on fire. (well .... a metaphor for locking up.)

New pc coming. plenty of energy to make this work. - Thanks GREG

Do you have any examples of the type of illustration you're producing? Or want to produce?
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

ok, took me a sec to figure out how to post the image. Thanks for checking in.

here is the SU model at least from the street side that i'm working on now. I've also modeled the Alley and a rooftop deck. which I'll post as well.

I'm also shopping for a new set up as this one is wasting tons of time. THOMTHOM you mentioned in an old post that the graphics card wouldn't help with vray which seemed against my nat'l tendency to upgrade everything in the setups I'm looking at. but of course I want to spend limited resources in the right places. Any advice is welcome. I'm continuing to search through the many setup/system posts. though most of them are over a year old.

      Thanks, Greg

The base file is 12 mb. ideally, I'd like to add more plants, people etc. But afraid I can't reasonbly get it rendered.

As for output, on one end, finished photorealistic shots for use in presentations and design review. But also schematic things for progress meetings. I've been going through the various setupsexamples and can see lots of cool options there.

I know I've probably over-modeled it. And I've yet to figure out quite a few things like how to effectively model the 'green-roof' and other things. that green plant is a placeholder at this point.

          Re: Rendering Times

what are your current steaming pile's specs, out of curiosity. Your render options may be able to be tweaked a bit to get some faster render times.

This model tool you 7 hours to render?
            From what perspective?
            In what resolution?
            Do you use any lights?
            Do you use any displacement?

Do you use DMC+Lightcache, or Irradiancemap + Lightcache - or some other combination? What are your settings for these sections

              Re: Rendering Times

I shouldn't call it a 'steaming pile'....we've been through a lot so I should treat it with more respect. it has earned it certainly.

              current system:
              intel(R) Pentium D CPU 3.40GHz
              Radeon X1600/1650 Series
              4MB ram (3.12 as its 32bit)
              windows xp service pack 2
250 GB HD with 165 GB open.

                Re: Rendering Times

regarding the 7 hour ordeal. it actually hung so I had to rethink my approach. I took settings from a list on the site, trying to avoid too heavy of a load. I will look it up.

output was only 800x600 (hwy it surprised me)
                DMC Sampler:
                Adaptive Amt .85
                Noise .01
                PS type Schlick
                min samples 8
                subdiv mult 1.0

Lightcache (don't think I messed with this)
                subdivs 800
                sample size .02
                depth 100
                scale screen
                paths per sample 16

                Irradiance Map
                min rate -3
HSph subs 50 (might have changed that)
                max rate 4
                samples 20

I know you guys are working too. I'm still learning and reading so I don't expect you to solve it for me when I've not finished my homework. I am interested though in what you guys usually expect to allow for. it wasn't uncommon in my old accurender set up for the finals to go 5 to 10 hours, but that was quite a while ago. (5 -10 years ago).

                  Re: Rendering Times

Are you sure that the Max Rate is 4?. If it's true, that setting is killing your render. You should rarely will need more than -1. The other setting are pretty much the default setting.

                    Re: Rendering Times

YEa 4 is very high. As Fernando said -1 is usually high enough (depending on the output resolution) .

sorry..... it was -1 ( I misread it)

Then, your setting seem to be good. What about Images sampler? Also are you using displacement? If yes, what are the setting? Are ypu using transparency on the diffuse layer, when I use transparency my render time increase considerately. Double check that you don't have overlapping wall (two wall in exactly same position). If you have really big textures, try to reduce the size of those textures.

                          Re: Rendering Times

ok, most of that is all default. but your comment about coplanar faces has me spooked. I have a lot of hidden faces between grouped shapes that I never bothered to erase. i posted an example as a different thread in fact.

thanks for the notes. how long does it take for you render your images usually?

I may have several issues compounding things. but I also noticed that even the little 3 chair example (chairs-Orignial.skp) takes 2 minutes to render w/ default settings.
