  • how does zdepth work?

Hey guys, I would like to render a zdepth map.... but I don't get the result I am hoping for.
So my question is how do I need to set it up? How do I determine the z-depth black and white? And z-depth clamp on or off?

    Thnx in advance

If I remember correctly you must specify the distance from the camera from where you want white fading into black. And you most likely need to enter the distance in inches.
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

I've tried using z-depth before, following the tutorial available, but all I get is a full black image or a full white image :/

          Hi
Basically, you need two distances (White and Black), one of the camera to the nearest object you want in the Z-Depth and others from the camera to the farthest object you want in the z-depth. You will get a black and white gradient between those defined distance. What distance should be white or black, doesn't matter you can always invert the effect in photoshop. The distances should be in inches.

Check out this thread. A script was posted and it works very well. Works for vfr but I don't know about sketchup.

It works good... what I did is use a script called 'Connect Page Camera's' (cameralines.rb) this script will connect your camera's in your scene by lines. From here it's easy to measure from a vertice to the nearest and farthest point. And these vaue's must be in inches.

My Guide Tools plugin let you add a CPoint to the camera eye. I use that to measure distances for my cameras.

Try checking the "Clamp Z-Depth" box. I had the same issue, but when I checked that box then it started working for me.
                      I am currently using V-Ray 1.49.01.

I actually have an unreleased plugin that draws the camera frustum as faces - nice to get a visual of the camera setup. I'll upload it shortly.

This video also shows how to do it manually with measuring lines in vfr, but I'm sure it's similar to what you may need.
