  • futur HDRI behavior ?

    Hey,

Just to know if the HDR sky's behavior will be corrected in futur release ?
When I use HDR image to get more moody ambiance, I get get any shadows at all.
We've try to tweak the HDR in PS but the result is the same

I know the blend trick to get shadows from the sun, but it is not the same...

Just to know if you guys are planning something about it.

    Thanks

But that is the nature of HDRI's. Some have very little shadows. There are some that does produce more. I don't see this as an application issue...
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

well, that where lies the issue..

I got a nice blue sky with a sun a very tiny clouds ( Peter Guthrie's 1123) but I can't mimic the 3DMax render with the same HDR. No shadows...

Here you can see some sharp shadows..

Here you can see my test with the same HDR :

See the difference ? I tried A LOT of different settings and PS tweaking.

first of all you need nice hdris, and then, you have to rotate the hdri and make the main source of illumination (the sun in the hdri perhaps) match with your sun position in sketchup... it's that easy....
or you could also leave the phisical camera on, but then you would have to increase hdri multipliers up to something like 50...

          Re: futur HDRI behavior ?

To have a very nice shadow using HDRI we need a special type of light called dome light. This light have a better sampling customized for HDRI. Unfortunately we don't have that light on VfSU.

            Indeed.

After a deep understanding of Peter's technique, it seems that he uses a sun light linked with a HDR map.

So I guess, I've learned something today

            Thanks

              Tom,
That sounds very interesting - link the sun light with HDRI. Like you, I've found the HDRI map does not produce the shadows I would expect (even with a very intense and small sun source in the map.) What is "Peter's technique" that you refer?

                That one.

                Unfortunately for us, it's 3Dmax.

But we could find a workaround...

Ah - I see, there is reference to a vray dome - which Fernando noted is not available in vfsu.

i've also bought and used one of peter guthrie's high quality hdris recently and came out with some pretty nice shadow results. i followed fernando's ( i think) advice in another thread to set up the sun, and then enable default lights (sun) followed by setting up the hdri. can't find the thread now though!...

I'll make another tutorial just to show how to combine the sun and the HDRI.
