general question about materials handaling (SU+VRAY)

hi

after working on a model for few days, and downloading modelparts from the internet (3dwarehouse) my model got cluttered with layared and materials which id ont use cause i create my own materials and modify models. how can i get rid of these materials ? i makes su work slower also confuses me from time to time

deleting them from su - each one - is very very slow and using the vray materials editor and deleting them from there - sometime create material sync problems which are hard to solve
is there a way to inport only model without material(using defalt material)?

Window > Model Info > Statistics > Purge Unused

Also - materials can be applied to edges, and that will prevent them from being purged.
