  • Noobie help~ how to control distortion in glass refraction

Hi all...quick question here. I am learning how to model a window glass of 1" thick and how to control the amount of distortion the glass is giving me...basically when i try to see something behind the glass, it gets distorted and shrunk in size...problem is fixed when i remove the refraction layer but then again it doesnt look realistic either...
    please help thanks!

Reduce the refraction IOR value. Use 1.3 or even 1

I also found out recently (thanks to Fernando) that your glass should have some thickness to it. I used to use a single plane for my glass and with refaction, the results are not great. You could always use a single plane with what they call 'fake glass' which has no refraction layer and a reflection with Fresnel. Fernando, correct me if I am wrong.

also - if you have a volume for the glass, make sure the faces are all facing out. If you have a backface on one side of the glass, the refraction will be messed up since it will be refracting the wrong way going out.

You are right. Some user like to use (Fake glass) because is a little faster than the real glass and they get very nice result. In my personal case and in our visualization studio, we use thickness on the glass geometry and material with a refraction layer.
