  • IES Light and volumetric solid

    Hello, I'm an architecture student..
I donwloaded the trial version of v ray software for mac,
actually I'm experimenting with v ray light,
    especialli IES light....
what i would like to know if is it possible somehow to visualize the volumetric shape of the light.
In that way i would be able to orient the lights in the proper manner...
right now the light seems like circle lights...
Thank for the attention ( if you have any suggestion or tutorials about that it would be wonderfull!! )

    Heya,

You can visualize the shape of the light using IES viewers.

Yes but if i need to position it inside the render? if I have a linear source of light for example i need to know which is the long and which is the thin side no?
Is there I way I could do that Inside SU?

Re: IES Light and volumetric solid

sorry, no. Currently there is only support for ies point sources, no linear ies. Also, there is no way to visualize which way the light is pointing (for non-symmetric ies files.)

maybe you can try using the IES Viewer (link above) to manually create your IES visualizer inside Sketchup.

Basically, take a screenshot of the IES light inside the IES Viewer. Create a cone, texture the screenshot, as projection, unto the cone. Adjust the cone until it has the outer shape of the IES Light.

Adjust the cone size so its smaller side matches the IES Light cone created by Sketchup...

Not sure it will solve your problem...
